It's cheap to test the baby's blood, and the baby doesn't have to get poked. They can take a small sample from the cord and run it to the lab, have the results in hours, and if the baby is Rh-, you don't need the shot. But please ask for Bay-Rho or Whin-Rho instead of Rho-Gam. These are not made with mercury.

don't quote me on this, but i think that rhogam is now mercury free in canada.

that wasn't the case a few years back unfortunately. i believe my son is paying the price for it now :(

in canada most dr's and midwives seem to raise a big stink about getting that 28 week shot. i wish i had of asked questions like you are now, with my first 2 children. keep on asking questions and getting answers. good luck!

just wanted to repeat this part because it is VITALLY important to get a shot that doesnt contain THIMEROSOL (which is what the methyl-mercury in these shots is called). Ask to see the package insert and get them to show you the ingredients before you get the shot.

    be well,
    nimh.

teeny, if you are more comfortable getting the shot now, then go with your instinct!

Good luck. But like the others have said, make sure there is no mercury (thimerosol) in the RhoGam.

what the heck does mercury do??? (i sound like a total oblivious idiot! lol)
I'll be sure to ask about it, but I want to know why I'm asking, lol.
like I said, I am definately getting the shot right now. I'm not taking any chances at all. If it will insure (sp?) that the baby comes out healthy, I'm all for it.

Mercury is a neurotoxin. Meaning it is toxic to the brain and the nervous system. What is ridiculous is that the FDA has an "allowable limit" to how much mercury can be in medication, when it could be eliminated completely. We can't do much about the mercury in our enviroment (and eating mercury is not as bad as having it injected) but the drug companies COULD eliminate it from vaccines and other injectable drugs, but it is a CHEAP preservative. Also the FDA "allowable limit" is the same for adults as for chidlren, while children actually should have a much lower Limit, due to their metabolism and the fact that their brain and nervous system growing and could be very susseptable to neurological damage from this poison.

thanx maggie. that sounds disgusting. i remember back in school, we weren't allowed to use mercury at all because it was harmful....but then they go and inject it in us....doesn't make much sence.
