I hve a confession to make

Hispanic men have done the same to me. When my friend and I were 14/15 years old, we would walk home together and constantly get honked at by them. Yeah, it made (and the thought of it still makes me) feel uncomfortable but I realized it really wasn't a big deal. And I happen to know an equal number of caucasian men who have made sexual comments at me (even as a minor), as well as Oriental men. However, if they followed me (if ANYONE followed me, for that matter) then I would feel threatened enough to call the police.
I don't think its very fair to say that you are afriad of hispanic men in general (But i completely understand why you would think that, espeically since you are 14). I felt the same exact way at that age. It's just unfortunate that you have had bad encounters with certain hispanic men. But I know many hispanic men who are very professional and respectful.

 

This has happened to me as well. Of course, men of all skin colors have hooted and hollered at me at some point. I think this is something about every teenage girl goes through.

If you are nervous or worried about your safety when you are walking home I would suggest taking a self-defense class or carrying some mace (learn how to use it properly though - any time you are spraying mace you risk blinding youself with it too, and if under attack that is not a good thing). In fact I would suggest the self defense classes ofer carrying mace. My father used to be a cop, and he said more often than not women end up getting the spray in their face too, and are in worse situations because of it.

But I think feeling like you have more control will help you feel more confident and safe.

As far as feeling like a racist, well sometimes I feel like a chauvinist because it sometimes seems to me that all men are plain old jerks, but then you have to remember the reality of the situation - which is that we are all people, and skin color or ethnicity does not make a person more apt to do another harm. Or in my case, gender doesn't make one a jerk.

I don't think you are a racist. Racists don't generally worry if they are racist or not =P

 

I'm actually taking a self defense class at my school. It bugs me, though, how many girls think it is the stupidist class they have ever taken. They think it when a guy sexually asaults them.

 

correction: they won't think it when a guy tries to sexually assault them.

 

Good self defense is a really great idea.

 

when i was a teen my family shoped at this grocery store that was located right next to an all mexican trailor park....and they all hung out at the store on a regular basis. it got to the point where i was afraid to go to the store because at 14 years old i didn't like being whistled and hollared at by 30 and 40 year old men. and it happened every time! (my ex boyfriend ironically happened to be mexican and lived in the same trailor park! he was 17 though, i was 14) anway, one day when i was 16 i was shopping and this guy was staring at me so hard that it was making me very uncomfortable....so i went straight up to him and got in his face and screamed "what the fuck are you staring at!!!!" he smiled and looked me up and down and that was it........so much for that! you're not racist by any means.....no one (at least that i know of) like to be stared at and treated like a piece of meat or object. just remember to judge people based on their individualism and not their class or race.

 

Ugliness and mace are the best forms of self-defense.

 

Get used to it. Now that you are developing men will catcall at you. Some will be relatively polite about it (looking good, honey), others will be rude (hey baby come suck my cock.) <true story and the guy was like 40, gross!

The self defence class is mandatory at my school. We get to beat up an atomically correct pillow shaped like a man. Fun!

 

wow, i can honestly say i have no clue what these other girls are talking about. My area is a good 33-33-33 percent mix of white, black, and hispanic and i think i get more catcalls from the rednecks than any of the black or hispanic guys. They stare a lot more but generally keep their mouths shut.

(note, i live on a Marine Corps base where the male to female ratio is 10-1)

 

I don't think you're racist. I've felt the same way before...had to consciously squelch whatever racist thoughts I might have had and realize, as you do, that not all people of a certain race are like those awful annoying people.

That said...I HATE HATE HATE catcallers with a PASSION. Regardless of race, if I get catcalled, they get the finger. It's rude, it's invasive, and I have NEVER heard anyone say anything that was particularly appreciative of my beauty or whatever. It's all so trashy and irritating. I just wanted to walk to school in peace, but instead I get eye raped by these assholes who then feel the need to yell out what they think, usually in a trashy and degrading manner. Please...just leave me alone dammit!

I do not appreciate it.
