It's my fault for bringing up Oprah. I knew how religious people are of her, and I'll leave it at that. I was silly to try to challenge that without expecting others to be a bit pissed with me. I don't hate Oprah, even if the title says that I do - I don't hate anyone, really. I guess I am just a little scared and worried about the state that the world is in, and I look at the rich and wonder why aren't they doing anything with there wealth and influence. And this isn't toward Oprah, but to the rich and influential, and to governments. I look at the rich and wonder if their wealth is the reason why others are living well below their means. I question if anyone should have 200million, and to quote Lewis black: "I'm a socialist, so that puts me totally outside any concept ... the Canadians get it. But seriously, most people don't get it. The idea of capping people's income just scares people. 'Oh, you're taking money from the rich.' Ooh, what a horrifying thing. These people really need $200 million". Does anyone really need that much money? And, again, to quote Lewis Black: "How much SHIT do you need?". I wonder about these things, and I guess that was the basis, and reasoning why I attacked Oprah... sometimes I forget that people can't read my mind, and I'm sorry about that, and I am sorry for going off on anyone. I defended myself from those that really were being jerks, and those that weren't, like Faerie.
i actually couldn't care less about oprah, i merely respect her. i was only making a point. i agree that it isnt fair that some people have millions while others starve. i agree with you sentiment that people with the means to do so should help others. but my concern is, where do you draw the line? i like my computer. i like my tv. i like my nice, warm house with its pretty decor. i dont need these things, but they give me comfort. rich people dont need all their money, but many of us also have things we don't need. i love to help others, and the thought of people suffering around the world breaks my heart. but am i going to begin living with only my bare necessities, and give up the things in my life that i like? no. thats what i mean by drawing the line. oprah does far more to better the world than i do. she also has more means to do so. but even though she can, doesn't mean shes obligated to. the fact that she does makes her worthy of respect in my eyes. but i am glad that you don't think i'm a jerk anymore.
I just sometimes think that the programs that she puts her money into, actually helps to keep Africa from advancing. As in, those programs were almost designed to keep Africa impoverished, and the money that is given to them only fuels the programs purpose. The rich wouldn't be able to be rich if there were no poor, and I think there are those that are trying to keep this imbalance. I am not saying that Oprah is aware of any of this, or if she is doing anything wrong, either. I am just questioning if her money is actually doing anything. Her giving away those millions is very nice, and I respect her for that, but is that money actually doing anything, and is it her fault if it doesn't? And you're right about letting go to certain niceties, I wouldn't want to change some of my comfort level. I just question, how comfortable do you really need to be? As in, do you really need to sleep on a bed that is made of extinct bird feathers, rather than a nice bed that is comfortable enough?
i see where you're coming from and can for the most part agree with you. your statements are very valid and your point well taken. *holds out hand* it has been wonderful discussing and debating with you, and i'm glad we could end on a civil and understanding note.
In July of 2007, it was reported that Winfrey was the highest paid TV entertainer in the United States during the past year. She earned an estimated $260 million during the year. kind of puts the 303 million into perspective no? and a lot of her donating comes from charities which fundraise, not just from her own pocket.. just want to get the facts straight
"and a lot of her donating comes from charities which fundraise, not just from her own pocket.. just want to get the facts straight" - ruski YES! Exactly. Thank you for pointing that out.
Whats the obsession with overseas... Who cares about the guy next door - gotta help some random guy across the globe that would not be dependant upon such help if it didn't exist. I can't imagine anyone needing more than $1 million dollars... thats 40 years of making $25000 a year...
The 'guy next door', as well as people overseas, both need our help. Why does it have to be the one or the other?
Out of all the people in the world, Oprah is someone that I am least concerned with... If I were to get upset and get disgusted with someone, again, she would be at the bottom of the list... I can think of many, many more people to think badly of rather then her, like her sidekick Dr. Phil who makes me die a little inside...
