Happiness is a warm puppy. (Well, that's what Charles Schulz always said.)

The secret to happiness is to be very unhappy sometimes. Then, when you're happy, you give it full appreciation.

I think I have a solution where everyone can be happy.

Those that don't believe material things are the secret to happiness can give their material things to the people who do, bada bing bada boom, win win for everyone.

Some trolls are fluffy and amusing

    Others are more... sinister.

But perhaps that's just on the other forum I visit. That place is a little wild, so...

My penis maintanes a constant temperature around 98 degrees unless I have a fever, and 98 degrees is warm. So, I am happy.

A lot of rich people would trade a lot of their money for health. So even though you may be poor if you're healthy you have a lot going for you

The longest lived people on the planet, the Okinawans and Ikarians, are relatively poor.

Pickle, these threads seriously don't plant any seed for real or meaningful conversation.

You could write a lead-in that makes a good philosophical case for that (in several ways), but the throw-away way you present this sort of thing really dead-ends the thread, and meaningful discussion in the thread. Even if some of it takes place, it's under the dark cloud of that several-word first post.

i would have to ask the next question:

then material things in what sense?

permitting oneself to enjoy that certain physical things exist; rocks, trees, wonders of technology, little furry creatures and so on,
certainly great joy is possible from permitting yourself to observe and enjoy experiencing the existence of these things.

on the other paw, the obsession to posses them, to posses anything, you will only exhaust yourself in pursuing,
and discover little reward in doing so.

the gratification that others may be impressed that you posses something,
    lasts, at best, moments,
    when it exists at all.

(and there are those, like myself, not impressed by what someone might come to posses, but only by what they craft themselves, with their own minds, hands and imagination)

the skill with which to use things creatively,
and the things required to exercise that skill,
you may well find THOSE things along the path.

but it is only in the actual exercising of those skills
    of creativity and exploration,
that happiness is generated as a byproduct of doing so.
