I wasn't talking about athletes, I was talking about music.
The greatness of athletics is much more clear cut than a creative medium like music. It's about outperforming your competition and pushing your body as far as it can go, it's about records, numbers, stats...pretty cut and dry stuff, not much ambiguity, not very difficult to establish what is great and what isn't.

'Kanye West' and 'Justin Beiber' may very well be geniuses....of social networking and marketing. They aren't anything but a pop culture brand, the face of some marketing firm, a make-up team and some outsourced composers, they add nothing to the medium of music that hasn't been done elsewhere and better.

Anyways, my point about Bach's devotion to God wasn't that God bestows greatness or anything, it was that he consciously expressed a desire to rid himself of any glory that may come of composition and was pursing the music itself. It's that type of devotion that leads to mastery over a creative medium such as music.

Metal sux, I've said it before on here & I'll say it again.
    Try another genre to practice.

I wouldn't go so far as making a blanket statement like "Metal Sucks". But going outside of your genre to learn new things or even perfect the style you already play. I always go back to Jazz Fusion. As a matter of fact 2 names that I always read coming up in speed metal guitarist interviews are :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuY0_JCHaF4"]YouTube - Al Di Meola - Egyptian Danza (Live)

    And

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjyqMZKeaPM"]YouTube - Frank Gambale Playing the song High 5.

Here are even some lessons from these guys from youtube:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HIY_IPIvCI"]YouTube - Al Di Meola

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZ4FZ80Qdd8"]YouTube - Al Di Melola Lesson

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WH8EbI89xgE"]YouTube - Frank Gambale Lesson

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-e0e8haczo&NR=1"]YouTube - FG giving a fretboard and Pentatonic scale sweeping lesson.

And you too can learn from a bassist.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiN9xaFqptA"]YouTube - Billy Sheehan Bass Guitar Tutorial Guide One of a Kind

What Sheehan is talking about can easily be applied to guitar but the thing he is saying is that playing fast isn't that hard if you think about it and don't move too much.

Best way I know of to get where your saying... to get "up to speed"...

You get it from performing on stage
    !

You need deadlines, commitments...You need to play in front of an audience where you cannot stop to ponder your mistakes 'n shit. You may think you practice your ass off, and maybe you really do, but it's a good bet that you stop more often than you think when you make mistakes, get frustrated...on stage there is no time for deliberation, you must play through...live or die, as they say.

When I was at the peak of my powers as a performing lead guitarist, I played no less than 4 one hour sets, three nights a week (house band)...This was prog rock late 70's ya know? Rush, UfO, etc...you don't think I had some fucking lead chores?

Live or die mo' fo', no whining...

    Rock on brutha!
