i usually get pretty positive comments. my friends talk with me about it and i tell them about dr b's and all that. one said "i was confused because i thought you just didnt shower but they dont smell bad" and i was pretty ecstatic about that.

my friends with locks and who know people with locks like to play with my hair and pick out the tight ones and the fatties. just one day they were really noticeable and everyone seemed to want to take a look.

i wear a tam at work and the guy that does the BBQ's was really interested in my hat, called it a "christmas rastafarian hat". we talked again later and he was telling about this guy he knows who is like 6 foot 5 or 6 foot 6 who has locks down to his shins. he also thought only black people could do it before he met the tall guy.

my friends with locks wanted to backcomb mine to speed up the process but i let them know that i wanted it to happen naturally. one used wax at first but they learned through living with wax that it sucked and was able to get it out eventually. we talked about wax and i explained what it does to their hair and why its not good.

there was only one time where i was upset by someone's comments. this one guy was being snide with me all day and out of know where he tells me (without even looking at me) to comb my hair. i was already fed up and ready to knock his lights out but i was able to keep my temper in check.

i had locks before this but they were very manufactured. no one ever had a problem with them but i guess thats because manufactured = clean in this society. that and they fact that they were red and in a mohawk probably detracted from any thoughts of uncleanliness and triggered more fascination with "whats up with that guys hair". i had complete strangers want to check out my hair then.

im sorry to hear so many of you are having trouble with people being rude. i guess just tough it out, you seem to be doing a good job of it so far.

I think anyone who is going to buck the system , especially with appearance, should read The Four Agreements.
Ruiz writes about compliments and insults really being projections of the giver, and having no value to the recipient.
