you all have so much clothes ... i have very little. 8 pieces, not counting panties and socks.

    - 2 jogging pants (worn out)
    - 5 tank tops (with holes in them)
    - 1 sweater (too small)

then i have a drawer full of socks (most of them are holey) and 10 panties but 4 are so threadbare that i wear them only if i have no other left.

i have money to buy something new but i hate to shop for clothes, everything belonged to my sister before. for most of you this must be silly? dont know how do you think about it?

the only bad thing is that i have to do laundry often. and that it was very cold some days last winter, without a coat. thinking about buying a coat for next winter.

I think I would freeze to death. How do you survive with this? I assume you don't have very cold winters with a lot of snow :).

we had a few days with a lot of snow here and also in spring it was really cold. but good thing is: from my room i can see the uni, i need 3 minutes to go there. a small supermarket is next to my home and most of my friends live nearby. so i dont need to be outside long if i dont want.

so or so, i dont like winter. its really good that is really warm now. no need for a sweater at the moment ...

today i wear only a top and jogging pants, barefoot. and panties of course. i would like to go without but my pants are really worn out and dropping, too dangerous to go without panties.

If someone else went clothes shopping for you, would you wear it?
Is it just the shopping that you dislike or are there certain types of clothing that you wouldn't wear?

no i dont think so. as long as i have something to wear. i kind of like my clothes and so i dont need other.

last time i was shopping was about ten years ago with my parents. but then i stopped buying/getting new clothes and got stuff from my sister if i needed something. my parents wanted that i get new stuff but i didnt. and then my parents stopped asking me i think they were happy about it partly because we were poor at this time. as my sister moved away five years ago she left me some stuff and what i have is what is left of it now.

i dont want to do shopping and i really would not buy new clothes. i dont like how are clothes are made today. kind of slave labor only to get us cheap stuff here. no i will not support that. but that is only part of the reason. i never liked to dress up but the contrary and now i could not imagine wearing a nice dress or something like that. or some fancy jeans and elegant shoes or so. that just is not me.

i will buy a coat for next winter in autumn or so. maybe from a thrift store or flear market. but only because i have only one sweater that is way too small what makes it not better in winter. if i had two or three that fit i would not buy a coat. and i must get some shoes for winter. right now i walk barefoot a lot because i like it and it is more comfy than with my broken shoes. but i need some shoes for next winter. mine will not make it through the next winter or even to winter i think.

but that is all i will get this year i think. dont know how long my jogging pants will make it they are becoming threadbare and the waistband is worn out on both. maybe i should sew on a new waistband but then again i dont really care. got used to pull up my pants when they are too low so its okay.

and if my tops or pants are falling apart i can always try to repair them like i do with my shoes. so no problem this year i hope.

well no new clothes thats for sure. and i like to dress like other people dont do. :) and i save a lot of money too :)

what do you think about this?

Right now all he thrift stores have coats. Come November, when the rains start, they won't.
This is the time to get one and have time to repair and personalize it.

I've streamlined my wardrobe. I have two very different jobs, both with different requirements, plus I travel between two home bases, with very different climates.

I'm planning a "challenge" or experiment where I am using a set number of clothing items (plus the staff shirts for the two jobs) for a month.
I did six items or less a year or so ago. It was great. And in the rains. Now I'm trying it in heat. With a couple more items.

I think that you like to be comfortable.
You could get second hand clothes that would be comfortable for you too. Nothing fancy, just a few things without holes that you can wear when it's cold outside.

Iknow how it feels when you really like a piece of clothing, and you wear it so much that it gets all worn-out and you don't want to part with it.

Although I have a lot more clothes than you, I would rather have less than wear something I didn't feel comfortable in.

Why don't you just buy a few warmer and more durable clothes? You wrote, that you could afford it, so that seems not to be the problem. It is okay to wear jogging pants and so on. I wouldn't go to classes in jogging pants, but that is only my opinion. If you feel comfortable, it is okay. But your clothes are completely insufficient for winter weather. You wrote that all the places you have to visit are nearby. Okay, but what if you want to visit someone who lives not nearby? You couldn't do it, if it cold, could you? This seems to be a bit limiting to me. What if you want to attend to a festival or music concert? I have seen your shoes (or what is left of them) in the other thread. These shoes would be totaly in pieces after a few hours at a festival. And barefoot at a rock (for example) concert? Way too dangerous. What if you are invited to a wedding or similar event? It is okay not to dress up in normal, everyday life (especially as a student), but what do you do if better clothing is needed? In my opinion you need at least one pair of jeans (preferrably without holes in them), a few sweater, a coat or warm jacket and durable shoes (boots perhaps, good in winter too). And a dress or something like that for special occasions. You don't need to throw away your old clothes and you can wear them if you like. But wouldn't it be better to have a bit more choice? And you can get all these very cheap second hand if you like. I would suggest to buy new shoes, though.
I think you are right, when it comes to this point. But as said, you can buy second hand ...
Well, okay. But I think you are limiting yourself. Think about festivals or weddings ... ;-)
I can imagine that. A coat is definitely needed.
I can barely imagine that you can walk with these shoes anymore.
I refuse to believe that this can be comfortable.
Well, that's perfectly okay. But I find it (as I said) very limiting to have only a few, threadbare things to wear, even if it's cold, raining, snowing, and so on. So in my opinion you should definitely get some things soon.

I have too many items of clothing & only wear a small percentage of them.
I have clothes that I have had for many years & are way out of date.
I have my favourite clothes I wear at certain times of the year & others are for special occasions I attend. I prefer some types of my underwear that keep me cooler in Summer & they make me feel sexy to.

I have somewhere between 7 and 10 tie-dye shirts I made myself then another 10 to 12 other shirts that are store bought and easily replaceable. I do need more shorts though...

yes thats very important to me. and i dont care when others think my clothes are trash.

a coat will do. i dont want anything else. i came through the last winter without a coat so ....

no i wont part with my clothes until they get unwearable.

i learned to live without much stuff so its really okay for me. only for other people it is often not and i find that sad.

i could afford it. but i will not spend money for clothes if it is not really needed. i need a coat and shoes for next winter. nothing else at the moment.

    it worked last winter.

there is always a way if you really want it.

yes the would. but i dont go to large festivals or concerts. only concerts at the local bar/pub here from time to time. there its no problem.

was never invited to a wedding and i wouldnt go to a wedding. dont like that stuff.

i dont need all that stuff. its okay for me how it is. it would be okay with even less clothes, 1 pair of pants and 2-3 tops were okay with me. would only be more efford needed to keep them clean.

i can but barefoot is more comfortable i admit that.

i dont think that i am limited. why do you think that? i never did anything or did not anything because of my clothes. you dont need much if you dont care what people think about you.

Most people like variety. I like to wear different clothes and different colours, depending on my mood. It's not about other people's perception, it's about what I'm most comfortable in at the moment.

Do you never have a preference for a certain colour?

Have you ever tried making your own clothes? New clothes don't necessarily have to be expensive or uncomfortable :)

Manu, I'm curious what is your reasoning for wearing only worn out clothing? Are you making statements? Are you being anti fashion? Are you avoiding attention? Miserly? Making this your personal style?

Personally, I'd find the same type of items in good condition and that fit.

How do you took at cost? Do you look at the original amount you paid, or do you look at it in terms of how much use can get out of the clothing item?

This is how I look at it: my clothing has a job. That job is to cover me modestly.
My task is to find and maintain pieces of clothing that do cover me modestly, and help me regulate my temperature.
I also find pieces that are sturdy that I can use for years.
My shoes, bought new in 1998, were about $100. Most I'd ever spent on anything aside from air flights or medical expenses. Or college... :)
But, with about the same in repairs over the years, I have gotten daily wear out of them for almost 15 years. Snow days and the three weeks they were off for repairs are the exceptions. I might have worn them to my brother's wedding!
If I were to look at cost per wear, .04 cents per wear, starting at $200, using 5011 days, or 14 years, less 21 days for repair transport and 300 snow days. That's estimating, of course. (I didn't count the three leap year extra days, either. I really hate math.)
Less than half a cent per wear. I call that free, now.
(I could not justify a $200 upfront outlay, by the way.)

Since I have been blessed with these tools, it is my job to maintain them, so I don't use additional resources, be that fibers for the material, time to find replacements before I really should, the fuel for the bus or train to shop for another, money paid out for replacement items.
So, it's also my task to keep what I have I good condition by repairing and maintaining.

I don't let books get wet or food rot, why would I waste clothing which is so demanding on the worlds resources?

It's also my task to keep me in good condition, to avoid illness, injury, etc. that means my activities have calculated risks. That means I dress warmly when it's cold, and coolly when it's warm.
Since I have my own business, I have a certain expectations to meet in terms of wardrobe, but I'm a massage therapist (and journalist on sabbatical) which gives me lots of leeway.
The second job is communications for a sustainable startup.

Mostly, that means I'm behind the scenes, and there isn't an office involved. But I do have the odd meeting, video conference or event from networking to selling the greenhouse at festivals.
At those times, I'm the face of the company. I must be professional and neat.
I am neat by inclination. I'm not professional in appearance by inclination.
Thus, I built a uniform for the Solar Greens job, and for massage.

But I also have a couple flowing skirts for festivals. Many locally are cheap to free.
I also have a set of clothing for painting at concerts. By set, I mean a pair of trousers and a couple shirts, moved from daily wear for oil stains (massage and cooking) or small holes that would be obvious repairs. Once some paint gets on them, who cares?

Those are my particular needs. They won't fit most people anymore than "have a black suit" fits my needs. If I ever need a suit, I get one on consignment, then consign (sell) it back.
I don't need to have one taking up space.

all of my clothes have different colors. but i dont care about colors really. i take that was is the most clean to wear it. and when nothing is clean anymore i do laundry.

no i haven't made my own clothes yet. i used my small sewing kit only to repair my shoes so far. but i will have to sew a few of my tops and one of my pants soon i think. i am only too lazy to do it right now.

no i dont want to set a statement. but i am antifashion, yes. i know that it is not fashionable what i wear but i dont care. on the contrary i would never wear something because it is fashion that would be more a reason for me not to wear it.

and yes i am too cheap to buy stuff that i dont absolutely need. i spend the little money i have for rent, food, meeting with friends and stuff i absolutely need for my studies. i avoid buying cheap food though. when it comes to food quality is important for me. so everything i can spare i can spend for things that are important for me.

i dont avoid attention. i get attention i think. i get comments about my clothes and i hear people speak about it. i dont care, find it funny sometimes. but i find it sad when people get offensive. i was thrown out of a store a couple of times for example. they said because i was barefoot but i dont know.

why? i dont care about the condition and if they fit. as long as i can wear them its okay. to tell the truth i like the condition of my clothes. more than if they were new at least.

i didnt pay for them. they all belonged to my sister before.

at the moment i dont need to dress for a job cause i have none. but i realize that someday i will have finished my studies. then i will have to search for a job and go to work. then i cant wear tattered clothes like now. but i hope i can get a job where casual clothes are okay. a friend of a friend works in the it as a programmer or so. she goes to work in slightly ripped jeans, slogan tshirts and flipflops. thats kinda cool.

Why? Because if I have items that don't require my effort to mend them I can apply that effort elsewhere.
    Like music, painting, writing, living.

I'm confused, you are able to attend uni without working? I know no one who was able to do that, even with parental help. (And certainly not those of us without.)

I did have one set of tidy clothing for work, all my years in uni. (Skirt, button up shirt, sandals --added socks in winter) washed them out nightly.
As for the rest, my partner was a dye artist, I had every new experiment in my dresser. Usually this was good. Occasionally I wondered if he'd been struck colorblind. Weirdly, my son wanted most of those when I was getting rid of most of my clothes.

thats the reason i didnt repair my clothes yet too. :) i only repaired my shoes up to now.

you live in the us is suppose? i dont know how the situation is there. you have very high tuitions i think? here where i live you can get aid from the state if your parents are too poor to support you. you have to pay it back partly though. and tuitions are very low about 200 dollars per semester if my calculation is correct. most of the money i have to pay is going into the ticket for bus. so i can travel in the city and outskirts with my student card.

so most of the money i have i spend for rent and food and meeting with friends and so on. from time to time i have to load my copy card for the copy machine and buy a book or so.

what would you have worn if you havent had a job? i do not have a job so i dont need to have tidy clothes. :)

you wore sandals in winter? i never wore sandals except a pair of flipflops last summer. but they broke after 4 days because they were old and the plastic was weak. but my shoes were like sandals last winter because they are so badly ripped.

so why do you wore sandals? did you like it or was it because you had no other shoes like me?

    sounds cool :)
