I do the index card thing too, only I got the idea from JT Halliday, author of "Flying Through Midnight". Its nice for sorting pieces of my story by scene, or items of research by subject, then over time I'll have enough to put it all together into an actual book.
I scribble ideas and verses down on scraps of paper and throw them all in a box and sort things out at a later point in time....same as rewrites...I'll write something and let it sit for awhile ..then go back and do a rewrite if needed...as far as choice of writing supplies...I have a mechanical pencil fetish for some reason
By hand if I must. But I can't read my own writing worth a shit, So it usually works out better on my comp. I like to use, Final Draft, StoryCraft, NewNovelist, Dramatica Pro, and Word.
it depends, essays and stories are written on the computer, but i find my artistic talent shows more in my notebooks, where i write poetry and songs. i prefer college ruled standard paper in a notebook, with a pencil or pen. it doesnt matter, the instrument doesnt change the mind.
always the computer. i cant concentrate the way i used to could with pen and paper... being at the computer gets my thought process flowin.. i also like to look up words on online dictionaries and thesarus's and broaden my vocabulary, as well as help myself to not sound redundant in poems. more common words tend to sound stupid when they are put in what would otherwise be an intelligent or thoughtful subject matter..
For me, I do both, type and hand write. Most things usually start off as hand-written (but not always), but things that seem to have more potential get typed up and are continued on the computer. And all my poetry is hand-written, always.
I've got this pad of faded yellow lined paper...It's probably 10 years old, and my dad likely used it for his writing at some point. I like using a really dull pencil and writing poetry or other stuff on it. I have a number of notebooks I use for writing and art. I usually use paper for poems and fairly short pieces. For longer stories, screenplays (I'm working on several at the moment...) I use my laptop.
Usually a notebook for poems.. computer for longer stuff, usedta be old-school style vim on a terminal, nowadays if I need fancy formatting I'll typeset it in LaTeX (that's for essays and assignments mainly, my own stuff I ain't so bothered about the way it looks). Pencil or pen depends on what I have handy, but I love my Pilot DR drawing pens, they rock. Hate rollerballs, ugh.. ballpoints and fountain pens are so-so.
I usually prefer a pen and a notebook. I like having all of my mess-ups written down instead of deleted so I can look back to see how I got started. I am also an incurably slow typer.
Both in my poetry and stories. Sometimes I use pen and paper (never pencil), othertimes I just use my computer. However, most of my handwritten stuff usually ends up on my computer at some point.
I like writing by hand, and getting hand cramps, the old fashioned way, but the computer is way faster and I don't have a lot of time.
