I'd rather see the resources going to the schools as opposed to building a barrier on the border. This isn't Pakistan.
Totally agree . I don't have any kids, I still pay into school taxes. We protect banks, courtrooms, sporting events, public gatherings. Schools and kids have more value than any of those.
They're not always surprise inspections? What purpose would notification of an inspection serve? Rather self defeating, I'd say. Somewhere between forty and fifty percent of U.S. households own a gun or two. Who is going to perform these random inspections? If the parent responsible for leaving their gun out and available to one of their kids is charged with gross negligence resulting in the death of someone, and then put in jail, that would send a strong message to people with guns and children. You are making the argument that, since some kids have used their parents guns to shoot someone at school, everyone who owns a gun should be forced to put it in a safe that is locked and chained to the floor, and to be ready for random inspections from the authorities. Again, I'm not the idiot who left my gun sitting around for my kid to take and commit murder with, but I'm nevertheless going to be subject to random inspections which are an invasion of my privacy. And this brings us to the issue of people who live in high crime areas who have a gun for home defense. If the bad guy knows that my gun--if I have one--is locked away in a safe or a padlocked strong box, they also know that surprising me ensures that I will have no chance of retrieving it in time to stop them. In fact, they can threaten me and my loved ones with violence if I don't give them the key to the lock or the combination to the safe. Just some food for thought.
George, I'm not attacking you personally, I'm criticizing your world view. You made a statement about teachers blaming classroom failures on parents without presenting valid examples or facts. You said something about someone, I don't know who, extorting grades from someone else without explaining how this works or what you're talking about. You expressed surprise that schools are political when it's a well known fact that school boards are a springboard for many who wish to enter into politics and that schools are a hot bed for those wishing to push personal or group agendas, such as creationism. If you believe that because I question what you post is getting too personal, then I'm sorry for that but I'm going to continue to try to understand what you and others post. Perhaps you could go into a little more depth to explain to me what you meant by the above statements. It could very well be that I'm the one who doesn't understand some very valid points you're making due to my own simplistic thinking.
I am making the argument that, rather than continuing to offer our children as sacrificial lambs to be paid as the price for the gun crowd's freedom, gun owners are going to have to make some concessions and pay the price for their freedom instead, in order to protect the innocent. You cant keep pretending like these mass shootings arent your problem or are "statistically insignificant" enough to ignore without making any changes. Freedom isnt free storch
I've read that the shooter was embarrassed in front of a whole class by a girl refusing to date him. He shot her first. Mother of Santa Fe shooting victim says daughter turned down suspect's advances I've also heard a report that he was bullied by students and coaches. Students talk about the moment shots were fired at Santa Fe High School I've read that he wanted to commit suicide but chickened-out. Texas Gov. Abbott: Shooter 'wanted to commit suicide' He also said that he didn't shoot his friends because he wanted his story to be told. Santa Fe school shooting suspect 'spared friends' so his story would be told He was yelling things like "Woo Hoo" and "I'm going to kill you!". Texas school gunman said 'I'm going to kill you,' then yelled 'woo hoo' as he fired Yet, investigators still say they don't know his motive. Clearly this kid was an outcast and he got sick of the way people responded to his weirdness.
I was referring to schools. Paddock is a different category. And he used multiple weapons, ARs included, and lots of planning and procuring of ammo etc.
Being a student is more dangerous in 2018 than being in the military. Analysis | 2018 has been deadlier for schoolchildren than service members

Sure. There are background checks. And now we might have everyone's guns locked away in safes, with random inspections occurring. So, when people still shoot other people, what will you then propose to decrease the number of deaths? How will this strategy of yours progress? Freedom isn't freedom if when people are burglarized, they can't access their gun quickly enough to protect themselves. Now let's look at the school shootings so far this year that people are holding up as justification for invading my privacy and making my home protection tool not easily accessible. On January 3, a man committed suicide using a gun in an elementary school parking lot when the school was closed and there were no children present in Clinton County, Mich. What's your take on that?
No one cares. Half the replies in this thread prove that. If anyone cared, this would have been addressed after Columbine. Instead, it's 20 years later, and mass school shootings are getting more and more common. This is just the world we live in now. Farmers overthrow empires, but their decendents can't change their own world. I don't know if we're lazy, stupid, or complacent. I'm done saying "God bless America." Clearly, He has not blessed us. RIP little ones. It's shame you will be reduced to nothing more than statistics used in the volley back and forth that is known as the gun debate. You disappoint me, America.
I hope no one pushes this as a reason to feel sorry for this guy because that's gross. It says he pursued her for months despite her refusals. That doesnt make her the bully, it makes him the bully (I'm not arguing with you, i know thats not what you were trying to say. I'm just making a general statement.)
Strangely enough, no one wants to address this aspect of the event in much the same way that they would rather ban guns than address the gross failings of the FBI in the Florida School shooting. Apparently, when it come to criticism, the authorities are off limits, but my right to keep a gun for home protection is criticized and openly condemned. The conditioning is alive and well in the children.
I'm not holding this up as justification I'm holding up the 10 children who died a couple of days ago and the 17 who died a couple of months ago. The 58 who died in Las Vegas. The 49 who died in Orlando. The 32 at Virginia Tech. The 27 at Sandy Hook, including 20 under the age of 8. 25 in a church in Sutherland Springs. 14 in San Bernandino. 13 at Fort Hood. 13 in Bingingam NY. 13 in Columbine. 12 in a theatre in Colorado. 9 in Charleston. And this isnt a complete list by any means I'm sure you've already noted most of these didnt happen in schools, which is exactly why adding guards and metal detectors in schools isnt going far enough. But we already know you're happy enough to write all these deaths off as statistically insignificant because it lets you tenderly place your gun in its nice red cloth and go about your day. (Childish gambino reference btw) I got the strap I got to carry 'em
The person used a shotgun in Santa Fe. What do you propose we do about that? The seventeen who died a couple months ago was the result of the FBI's gross criminal negligence. What do propose we do about that? As I said, making my gun less accessible in an emergency doesn't address the real problem here. Now, On January 3, a man committed suicide using a gun in an elementary school parking lot when the school was closed and there were no children present in Clinton County, Michigan. What's your take on that? We'll get into the mass shootings next. But first we're going to address these school shootings.
My take is that you're attempting to manipulate the conversation away from mass shootings so that you can avoid acknowledging how problematic they are and how America is the only country with a mass shooting problem.
Did you notice the thread title? My take on that is that you don't want to give your take on the school shootings I'm putting before you. If you don't care to discuss that, that's fine. I'm sure you have your reasons.
