^^ just so you know, Molly the Hippy was an alter ego of someone absolutely NOT fitting Molly's description...it was done out of harmless fun, but just so you know...:)

It shouldn't be financially taxing to be a hippie. It wasn't back in the 60's.. they didn't go out of their way to find "hippie attire," nor should we. Everything we really need is at our fingertips. I, myself, have started shopping at vintage/second hand stores and it saves a bunch of money, plus i'm not contributing to the profits of big businesses!

I don't find it expensive to be a hippy. I bought a pair of John Lennon like glasses at the dollar store and I have some blue head wrap from my moms drawer on right now. and all i wear is a tank/t-shirt and some simple flare jeans. and people think of me as the typical 70's flower child.

in all honesty it isnt about looking the part, its about being the part (does that make sense?)

    wear what you like.

i think it's all bout the attitude.
hippy is the way you look at life not the way you look :)

i'm new here by the way.

I think it's ironic that being a hippie is expensive
I mean...aren't hippies supposed to be the poor ones living off the land with holes in their jeans and love in their hearts?
Yet it's expensive to get those clothes that look worn and colourful.

Aside from that...the stuff at flea markets and downtown (where I am) have better stuff than they sell in stores.

I found a summer dress that fitted me right off a display.
    It's beautiful, and......second hand.
All it needed was a washing and a few reinforcing stitches.

Some stuff for me, I have to buy from regular stores.
    Like jeans.
Because I'm tall, but also kind of small. So if they fit in the waist, they're too short. And vice versa :toetap05:

    Hippies don't have any money.

I buy all of my clothes from thrift stores now, and I find awesome shit that I could never find anywhere else. I also find cheap stuff that doesn't cost much and make them pretty because I'm bored and I like to use my time to create things rather than pacify my boredom. You can get really nice blank t-shirts at craft stores for $5 and make them amazing with dye and patches.

Here's one of my favorite thrift store finds. It was less than $10:

i buy alot of my clothing from stall downtown in the market, or from gap mainly because it is expensive but i know the clothing will last me more than 3 years, so it's kind of worth it. I just wear alot of jeans, bellbottoms because they are so fun, and long flowy skirts in the summer because they are very breezy and then air through. for shirts i just wear tank tops and cute sweaters. i also have a couple pieces of really nic ejewlery from my grandma, turquoise necklaces, beaded earrings, wooden bracelets, silver spoon rings and pendants, i add them to outfits but keep it pretty simple. i'm not very trendy (at least i don't think so seeing as i only spend like .. 200 bucks a year on clothing) but i get compliments all the time about my great style.

i dont mean to rip on you guys but this thread makes me real sad man. Its a bummer that you feel that being a hippie comes down to your dress and if ppl look at you at shows and stuff that means they are judgeing you and anyone who judges someone like that isnt worth your time man so dont worry about. To me calling a hippy a hippy is like calling a african person a ****** in my book its disrespect hippy as a term was used to hold down the free thinkers of the 60s and used to put us all into a square little box and by placing a label on ourselves we allow ourselves to become stereotyped and this leads to hate. I do not label myself a hippie and i wish others wouldnt too i understand why labels are used and i understand why i am calleed a hippy i do have a lot of the stereotypical attributes i dig peace huge fan of good music im a vegetarian im buddhist and plus the pysical attributes as well. Long hair tye dyes barefeet you know the deal but by being labelled a hippy i am thought to be the underbelly of siciety by some( i think its the other way around) just because i am a "Hippy" but in reality i am a beautiful free loving careing person

I totally understand where you're coming from. It seems like there are 2 types of "hippies" around where I live. Those who dress the part, don't work, are basically homeless, and big-time into drugs. Then there are those who wear whatever they like and have hippie values but no one knows because they don't look the part. It's sad, really. It's like, the people who want so desperately not to fit into boxes, fit in the tightest ones around.

I think people can make the most beautiful stuff as long as they are original, creative and when you make something yourself it becomes much more valuable.
I paint my clothes as well, the process is fun nd the results are exiting :)
Just be yourself and be creative

I thought the point of being a hippie was free expression and not caring what others opinions of you were?
Wear what you want. Fuck them and their self righteous, prototypical nonconformist friends.

Dude, you go online and people are selling these crazy awesome hippie threads for 200+!! Who are these rich hippies??? Is there such a thing??

I make my junk. I ain't rich enough to be some peoples idea of a hippie, good thing too. The word "hippie" now-a-days conotes a lot of junk I'm not. I just be me, you be you, and we'll all be cool! Forget the labels.:cheers2:

Ever heard of Urban Outfitters or Free People? They sell their clothes for ridiculously high prices. These brands market to rich suburban kids who would rather shell out $200 because they don't know what else to do with mommy and daddy's money, for a dress that looks like it has been handmande (although it isnt) and that you are trying to look like you're poor.
    Check out their website: http://www.freepeople.com

Urban Oufitters is basically thrift shop styles at Department store prices. Marketing is (again) targeted towards teens and college student trying to emulate the hippie or "alternative" look without actually being a hippie or alternative.

It's a total scam. I can't believe people buy this stuff.
