I agee that it's not the clothing, but who you are inside. I wish more people would repect us and not be so unfriendly just because not all of us are wearing the "right" clothing. Personally, I just dress in whatever makes me feel comfortable like old jeans and a 60s or 70s band shirt or an old tie-dye shirt. Remember it's what's on the inside that counts. Peace out! :)
EarthSongPS- I LOVE tie-dye shirts and have made them as a little girl.

i think its important for hippies to some degree, to follow what is the standard hippy uniform cuz it makes it easier to recognize other hippies

Why try to avoid something though? You should be comfortable with yourself enough to just wear whatever you like. Clothes don't define the person. Quit thinking of the labels and just be yourself. And what does it matter if people think of you as a hippie? You know your true self so other's judgements shouldn't matter. Avoidance causes you to lose your sense of self.

I completley agree with you!!! clothing is just material, all it does is add to our character and personality, there's no way you can avoid judgement...Life is to short to define yourself as one thing, Life is about finding out who you are, nothing should hold you back!! express who you are, bee happy with who you are, there is always gonna bee people who are gonna judge but then again you are going to find like minded people who think like you, respect you for who you are and in return will help you bee more confident in expressing yourself!

or, self is the only thing that is not an illusion, everything is the illusion, the self is where we find the real

true and the self is universal

there is only one person here... every single one of us

the self as separate or the ego is the illusion

Totally agree with this. The whole idea of being a hippy (as a culture) is not participating in the consumer culture. Kohls by default cannot sell hippie clothes.

I get my hippy clothes from goodwill or similar but I'd say to be true you should make stuff yourself or buy from the local economy. Don't worry about other people, be satisfied with yourself for being true to yourself rather than trying to find the right clothes to impress other people. That is a costly path that has no end.

Hippie "culture" is counter-culture(not sub-culture) to the predominant capitalist/consumerist culture of our society(in the US etc)

I know exactly what you mean.... the problem is, if anything is trendy, it's expensive.

Well hippies are cliquey like the rest of us humans.

I know if I went to a hippy festy thing dressed as I usually do they'd all be shouting babylon at me and judging me on my threads. It used to piss me off, even when I did dress hippy as a teen. I still remember someone dissing some other hippy because their shirt was too new (seriously) and yet another that made some poor guy feel bad 'cause his sandals weren't burk's.

There are dipwads in every crowd.

Thing are gonna badly when group of soem bald-headed people pass me on the street or at school and start to yell. but sometimes they are very agressive and they gonna to hit me. I had some argues with them. It wasn't good meetings ;/

Whoa...if you don't own 2 patchwork items, 2 tams, 3 60's band shirts, 6 tie-dyes, and a minimum of 2 pairs of ripped jeans then you shouldn't even be calling yourself a hippie. Oh...and you MUST reek of patchouli.

The term 'hippie' might as well be wiped out of existence. This thread is a perfect example of how skewed our alternative culture has gotten. What once was a movement for peace and unity is now nothing but a shallow label for a way of dressing and a sub-group of music...oh...and the drugs and deadbeats. (how could I forget those?) Seriously...if a group of people saw Hitler or Bin Laden in a tie-dye shirt I'm sure more than a few would refer to him as a hippie. That's how stupid and far-fetched this has all gotten. Bah-humbug.

Anyways...I dress like your typical outstanding citizen most of the time. Ya know..the kind the cops would never suspect of having an eighth of weed and some paraphenalia in her purse...rather the woman that's on her way to work or something noble like that. Works for me.

    Gosh...I say just be yourself.
    Wear what you want.
Be yourself, and don't hide it because your afraid of what other people will think...
I've read every post in this thread, and everyone has specific points their trying to make...
But some people are totally missing the whole point of 'being' a hippie.
Just..be yourself, enjoy who you are, and don't hide it, flaunt it, because theirs no one else in the world exactly like you. You should be proud of that uniqueness, instead of hiding it because your afraid of 'not fitting in'.
