I used to shop at Deva when they were in Burkittsville, Maryland. They sold the name and moved it to the midwest. The cotton that they now use is thin and flimsy and no longer meets my need. Just 'cause I live in L.A. doesn't mean I don't want things that last.

I'm not exactly sure that I know what people mean when they talk about wanting to dress hippie. I have an assortment of jeans that are different colors... some are Lee, Wrangler, No Brand. Used to find old Sergio Valente or IZOD or Calvin Klein at thrift stores.

If you are truly serious about some sort of high end garments, then I suggest you go to JOANNs and find some patterns, go to a fabric store and then find someone who can sew for you.

Good luck in finding what you seek :)

Yep,I was just thinking that being a hippy has nothing to do with clothes and of course it doesn't. It's a way of life and a state of mind. Buy your clothes, make your clothes whatever. If you do spend a lot of money on your clothes, that doesn't make you a fake hippy. Furthermore,it's your business and yours alone.

some buddhist words spoke that one should only wear "discarded rags".

such a choice is likely to not only starve the ego from bullshititous but is likely to encompass other well-meaning trend/solutionsuch as recycling, lower-CraPrint-on-the-nvironment, efficient allocation of financial resources etc.

why does it even matter what you're wearing? unless you're going to a school with uniforms, or a job with a strict dress code (which i doubt anyone on this forum has). unless you fall under those two scenario's wear what you please, what's comfy.

for me, it's cargo pants and skate sneakers. for someone else it could be jeans and moccasins.

you see what i'm getting at? you clothing should be about you, what you like, not what madison avenue is saying is hot right now...

this whole culture is about self-expression, why would we all want to look the same?

Gypsy Rose has some lovely things. Most are home made (for those of us who don't sew) or made by Co Ops which help womyn in third world countries.

I really don't know what "high end" means. I think of, like, Nordstroms or Macy's when I hear that word. Places that have people follow me around when I walk around in "their" store, so the dirty hippy doesn't steal anything......not the kind of place you'd find nice clothing to feel free in, IMO.

Gypsy Rose isn't exactly cheap, but how many broomstick dresses and tie dyes do you need? Their stuff is good quality. My kids and myself and even my dh buy clothes from them.

I recently started tie dying and I did buy a brand new white top to dye which was abit extravagant I must admit but I've decided to get them from ebay in future. Jeans can be a tricky thing to get second hand because they are not often the right shape (I can't stand the tapered leg type and that is all I ever see in charity shops, often the leg length is too short for me also). I try to buy my jeans and other clothes in sales too but since there is often nothing I like there I end up getting tops from a catalogue. We don't have thrift shops here as such so it can be difficult to find things that are worth wearing, second hand. Ebay definalty is always worth a look though.

high-end hippie.....I think that is an oxymoron

PS....what's wrong with thrift store style??

if you are looking for high end 60s clothes...look into Jackie O. styles and Audrey Hepburn...Chanel or something....try eBay

clothing is just cloth that covers your body .... it doesnt matter what you wear all that matters is your personality all that matters is your a good person and you are happy with yourself and the life you live. I hope you understand that materialistic things are nothing and mean nothing. You should only live to ur expectations not to anyone elses. Just be yourself and do what you want to do because life isnt worth living if your not doing what u want to do.
Personally thats what I believe ..... LOL

I am just saying what I personally believe is materialistic things shouldnt be a big concern in someones life there are more important things to worry about then what you are wearing

Hippy clothing is anything flowery, old, and usually homemade. Vibrant colors such as tie dye are hippy clothes. Just go to a thrift store and get some retro clothes. Dressing unique is cool, just don't expect to turn heads with the main stream fashioistas. Put on a 1940s hat and a fur lined coat with plaid pants and chordoroy shirts. Being a hippy is about making your own fashion statement.

In NYC, the thrift store sin the Village are always worth a check. I got a lovely floor length skirt for $8 last time I ventured out there. It's got all lacy designs and such, and it's warm as anything. Buy things you like, not things that are "omg hippie!" Express yourself. :)
