I firmly agree. Free speech is often misunderstood by people who think it means they can say anything they want. However, while that is true to an extent, when that speech harms others, or incites war or harm, then it isn't exactly good. It's okay to speak your mind, which is free speech, but not okay to insult another person or harm them emotionally. Free speech simply means you can speak your mind, but not harm anyone in doing so.

 

You're right it really means I can say anything that won't possibly hurt or offend anyone around me. Maybe we can establish a moral "what offends people" high ground. Then it will be easy to make sure "free" speech isn't abused.

Like it or not truly free speech means FREE SPEECH. Curbing ignorant speech by "not allowing it" or pretending it's not there is childish. Wouldn't it be better to irradicate hate speech by choice rather than sanction? You know, cause ACTUAL change instead of perceived.

Who decides what is offensive? You, him, the person hearing it, the persons that might ever hear it? It's a sliiiiiide man. Free speech is free speech, even if it hurts someone's feelings. Regardless of "laws" and "rules" people still have free speech, since the Vchip hasn't been inplanted in our heads yet.

Welcome to earth, some people are ignorant and hateful. Dealing with, and learning to deal with people of different opinions than you is how you grow, even when those opinions are ignorant. Remeber, THEY don't think they're being ignorant.

If you post to a thread and address another member of this board who has an obvious differing opinion than your own, and you start your post with the phrase, "Look, fuckface..." there needs to be consequences. Freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom to abuse others or be patently offensive in the free exchange of ideas. THAT is what is childish. I know for a fact this is what Libertine is talking about.

There is a certain member of this board who advocates a one-world fascist government that would function like Mussolini's Italy or Franco's Spain. I may playfully insult him or suggest that Kim Jong Il sexually arouses him, but I don't call him names or suggest that his theories are stupid and he is a moron just because I disagree. There is far too much of that sort of disruptive, hateful behaviour here and it's pointless.

I appreciate that you agree with me in principle but as for one man's actions, you're mistaken. We seem to get troll heavy on a 90 day cycle. I know, shit happens but policing seems to be a tad lax.

There are also many outdoor plazas of diverse tolerance in many metropolitan areas across several countries, which may cater to such individuals as safe havens. There they may express there feelings, watch nature, read a book, write out thoughts, have a picnic, find a girl, sod off, etc...
