I don't know much about the practice of Hinduism but the mythology of it is some of the best in the world. The Ramanyana is good reading, fantastic story, better then the mahabharata, imo.
Yeah, beat me to it. :cheers2: Yeah, I really don't know much about it either. :leaving: An eye for an eye makes the world go blind - Gandhi. The chaste system? I'll agree with Natural here. I'd rock badass in that but I've never seen/heard it or of it in India. And well, it's definitely not in england! My understanding was it's not that our lives are better. It's that as a human you have the ability to change things. As a dog you're going my instincts and such, sure you have a soul, you have emotions but you're restricted. As a human you have the ability to try and get out of reincarnation.
I try to live like the world is based in Karma, but I hope for Grace. That's the problem I've had with my studies in meditation. It's like, okay, I can only reach spiritual enlightenment when I let go of all attachment? I think I'll stay dark.
Also said 'bowling for team satan'. I was being facetious, I have a deep appreciation and interest in learning more about the Hindu faith. I'm disinterested in your respect.
Never heard of it in India? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_caste_system http://theviewspaper.net/prevalence-of-caste-system-in-india/ http://books.google.com/books?id=nJMs-r0FY50C&pg=PA1&dq=caste+system The chaste system is still deeply ingrained in rural India.
I wouldn't expect you to be interested in it, but from what it sounded like you were asking about this for a film script or something which you could've really said from the beginning. Something which probably would'nt of changed the thread but would've felt more honest. Oh no, I hear about it all the time from people here. From what I read about it and that, but I've never seen/heard someone, non indian or not, go to India and mention it. I've never heard an Indian say anything about it (except I heard someone complain about a documentary which apparently 'exaggerated it'). Of course, Ive never been to rural India!
I have spend a lot of time in India and let me assure you that it's very much alive, and not just in rural India.
But I am interested in it. My intent was to hear from people with the cultural experience, not to talk about myself. Apparently I've framed it the wrong way or you're unhelpful and passive aggressive. '
It's a toss up really! Nah, if you're being serious then I have no problem, but to me at least it sounded like you said one thing in the beginning and true intentions later. *shrugs* Anyway, doesn't matter. Back to the topic at hand...
that makes some sense, i suppose, but i still don't understand how some nonhuman creatures are more or less esteemed than others. also, i do think i was erroneous in using terms such as "good" or "bad" karma, but still the point is similar. idk, i'm confused about many things.
I am writing something with Hindu characters in it. I didn't want to talk about it and drag this off topic. My reasons for writing something about with hindu characters are because of my interest in it. Which is why I want to learn more. It doesn't seem dishonest at all form my perspective. I just wanted to talk with some of the several hindu poster alongside just reading library books and wiki articles. jai, if you don't mind me asking, what kinda experiences have you had? Is your family pretty orthodox? Do you go to a temple? Sorry for all twenty questions. I live in Fort Worth, which isn't a terribly diverse community.
What kinda experiences? haha.. You're probably going to need to explain that. Orthodox? I guess not really. We live in Britain so it's all a bit harder but I still have my mauli. Temple? We have one in the house, the closest one is in a few towns (?) over. Well, it's not here anyway so we don't go often.
Like celebrations. What holidays does your family celebrate? What's the temple in your house like? Do you have statues of deities? Which ones? Again, sorry to be nosy. I just think it's cool.
Diwali, birthdays, um.. I don't usually remember names. Bhaiya Dooj. Rahki. Janmashtami, um... there's more probably. We'd celebrate Holi if we could. It's cooler now. I may be able to get a pic but don't get your hopes up too much. It's got statues, yes. It has a big one of Ganesh and Parvati on a tiger. It has framed pictures of Krishna and others around. There's more... but I think it'd be best if I got a picture or at did this in more detail later. But one thing I will say is that it has the temple, and then what it's on is the cupboard with all the things for it e.g. incense, books, instruments (although rarely used...). It's not very big either. Takes up one corner of the room.
