    answer me a question honestly:

suppose that two years ago they finally got rid of A.A.,
where would we be right about now?

    would it be a better?
    harmful?
    or the same?

on a side note, how come there isnt a Puerto Rican History month?...now THATS injustice!

I agree with what you've said about affirmative action being blacks asking for "segregation on their terms," but I don't agree with this about Native Americans.

It's true that the land that Native Americans occupied was taken from them by force.

But... history is full of people taking the land of other people by force!!

So if we are supposed to give back everything that anyone ever took from another via conflict, um, that wouldn't ever work, now would it. What you'd be saying is that the LOSER in every conflict is supposed to have everything he lost given back to him in order to set things "fair" again... but that's not the point of LOSING. And the point of WINNING is getting to KEEP what you've taken from those you beat.

So how does it make sense that because the Europeans who came to America beat the Native Americans and took what was theirs that now they should be giving it back? All over Europe, there are very very settled countries whose people have been where they are for centuries -- but they didn't START OUT where they are. That means we should trace back to who had the land before they did, and give those people back the land? No no no no no. That's insanity. It's just now how things work.

so, you wouldnt be complaining if they were white and got failing scores and were hired, so whats the difference if they were a different race?
But if they were white, thats okay though
I swear when someone of a different race gets something, white people always have to complain, no matter what...

You know Ive seen a lot of peoples true colors come out in this thread and it makes me sick to my stomach to here the way some of you talk...

no, i'm glad they weren't hired when they applied as whites. i just pointed out that when they re-apllied as "minority" and still had failing scores they got hired because minorities were held to a far lower standard than white canidates for the job. i'm happy they didn't recieve a firefigthing job when they applied as white canidates, but if they stiill recieved failing scores when they applied as "minority" why the hell did they recieve the job. they didn't deserve the job, no matter what race they were, and soley putting down that they were minority got them the job with failing scores. they became firefighters. i dont' want incompetent people as firefighters. i don't expect anybody to get a firefighter job with failiing scores. but when minority people get that job with failing scores over people with scores who have scores near perfect, theres something wrong.

I just don't think it's fair and I think it would be the honorable thing to do, give at least SOMETHING to the Native Americans. The Native American population is suffering. They have a high unemployment rate and were thrown on reservations with little to no resources. This is just my opinion. I just think it's sad we stole everything from a group of people and then treat them like trash.

mystical youre the one who got pissy and defensive just at the site of this thread..i think most "whites" would agree that it would be unfair if the white failing students got the job as well. everthing is all peace and love untill someone brings up an african american issue...then you start thinking narrow and talk stupid: "you wouldnt be complaining if they were white and got failing scores and were hired" i believe you are more racist than you think you are.

two, affirmative action is bullshit. why not hire someone who has the credentials, not because the colour of their skin.

three, the indians do not have it bad at all....... well at least here in kansas... they have gas stations and casinos which take a hell lot of money from the white folk......

her race its's self is considered a set back in society just like income or a learning disability-or gender. There are tons of scholarships that are only availible for women or that you are more likely to get because you are a woman. I am for affirmative action because it bring up both women and ethnic minorities and eliminates barriers and gets them one step closer to having equal opportunity when competing with a white male. Equal opportunity as in she can put the scalorship on her resume so she is more competitive.

discriminating against the white male? there's enough scolarships that exclusivley give to white males; the masons, some rotary grants, some lions clubs grants, young mens buisness association give some scholarships only to white men and society in general usually places a great importance and value on white men in general. what's given to minorities is incentives not your allotted white male privilage.

    Yes.

Are you saying there isn't the equivalent for females given by females?
    I believe there is...

I haven't even started talking of the discrimination against more qualified white males in high demand schools (ie: vet/med).
A Relative was the wrong race/sex to get into vet school but was able to enroll in the med school of his choice - what's wrong w/that picture?

I've seen/heard of it since the beginning of government sponsored discrimination (aka aa).
Spin all yall want but the Facts are still going to be the Facts.

It's kind of funny but sad that no one mentions the fact that affirmative action is not only for Blacks but for Indians, Latinos, Asians, Women, and people with limitations. (Such as Hearing or Sight impaired.) The only people that you here getting it are Blacks and it's usually Black people that are less educated or qualified than their white counterparts. It wasn't sesigned to descriminate but to level the playing field. The problem I have with it is that it doesn't help the people that are being discriminated against rather, it makes it harder for those people because the system choose people that qualified 90% of the time but it's the 10% that people notice because they don't deserve it. It's sort of like Johnny and Sara's father owns a store. Johnny and Sara help their pop run the store during the summer. Johnny sits around and drinks up all the pop while Sara does all the labor and cashiring cashireing. People aren't going to look at Sara and say what a fine job she's doing they are gonna look at Johnny and say,"What a goof-off, if he wasn't the boss's son he wouldn't be working here. The moral of the story, hire more Saras.
