Yes you can. It's really not hard telling the difference between Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, to name three. It's no different than noticing the difference between French people from Quebec and French people from France. Say all the politically correct things you like, but there are noticable differences.

Anyways, about the topic, living in my particular part of Canada I see a very large amount of difference ethnicities, combinations of them, assorted cultures, etc.

True story; the other day on a bike ride I saw a buddhist monk sitting cross-legged at a bus stop (in his orange robe) talking to a black guy in a suit.

Don't know if they were gay though...

Years ago I would ride the bus everyday with this Korean guy. One day, at the risk of sounding rude, I asked him a question, though I hadn't even spoken to him before. I asked, politely, if he was from Japan. He smiled and told me that he was from Korea, then he explained to me the differences in appearance between Chinese people, Japanese people, and Korean people. We became friends after that. Now it seems more than obvious when I see an asian person.

all of the characteristics you may use as criteria to qualify someone as "chinese" are not universal, and arbitrary.
