most restaurants that say they are vegetarian use lard or meat broths so most of the time whne you think you are eating something veggie your actually not
when it comes to soups and certain dishes, it's wise not to ask whether it's vegetarian but to ask bluntly what kind of broth is used or if there is lard in it. That way you can get a straight answer, make your own informed decision and not have to watch the waitress stumble blindly around the word 'vegetarian' and give you something you shouldn't be ingesting.
Even if you accidently contaminate food (while your at work, preparing food for other people), it's at the least about a $65,000 fine TO THE INDIVIDUAL (might be more). How the hell do people get away with this? And what kind of sick sense of humour would they need to find it remotely funny? I accidently ate meat at church a few weeks ago when it was the passover dinner or something. Now everyone at church knows I'm veg b/c of the amount of times I have bitched to them about how they only ever have food there that is non-vegan/vegetarian, and that if they say they will provide food for the day, make sure that at least one thing doesn't have dead animal in it. But anyhoo, the only food I could actually eat that night was the potato, which had been covered in gravy, which had been all over the meat (which was on the same plate). It was only a tiny scrap of meat, but the second I realised what it was I got it out of my mouth in a flash and put it back on the plate. I was so pissed off...
This entire week we were in Winnipeg visiting my mom's since forever friend... who was recently diagnosed with cancer and only has about 1-1.5 months left....So we go there for supper (she is Filipino) and were guests to a massive feast that she had prepared (my mom told her before-hand that i was veggie)... so we sit down for dinner and she brings out four dishes : a shredded beef dish, a rotiss chicken, a shrimp dish, and a vegetable dish that she puts down right infront of me and says ... "just for you"...... well she was obviously more out of it than we had thought..... or just unaware.... but the veggies in the dish were very obviously basking in some sort of store-bought chicken broth.. Im not ashamed to say that I ate it all, disgusting though it may have been.
UGH!!! chinese restaurants are the worst, they think that cooking something with ham grease is gonna go unnoticed. i remember ordering a spring roll when i was about 12, biting in and instantly knowing i was eating pork (i'd never tasted it until that point. god it was gross!) i was so pissed! and what about these people-- "the pizza's pepperoni, but you can just pick it off..." sorry, still tastes disgusting!!
I once ate prawn crackers, the thought didn't reach my brain until i read the packet and realised they weren't for vegetarians.
I once ordered a bean burrito and they sent me a been and beef one. I took a bite, realized it was meat, and spit it out.
Ahh i went to a mexican restaurant and got a veggie enchilada with beans and rice on the side. i took a bite of the beans and they tasted kinda weird, then i realized that they probably got cooked in beef fat. i spit it out and uh... didnt say anything i just pushed them to the side of my plate
worse: frijoles are commonly cooked in lard. pig fat. But I'd think that was less likely in Boulder. Where was it?
yeah. i've had some meat flavored broths that i didn't know had animal fat and stuff in it. i know it's just broth but it made me sick, i felt so bad i haven't actually had meat on accident before, thought. i'm very thankful
When I was a small child we used to buy veggie macaroni cheeses. One time when I was 4 or so, I was happily eating them when suddenly I noticed something pink in the sauce and my mum saw that it was ham. My dad had accidentally bought a pack without checking the labels and I was put right off them for a few months. Fast forward a few years after I had just downed a packet of mints to find that they contained gelatin. I had obviously missed it when I looked at the ingredients and it made me feel quite bad afterwards. I'm quite focused on never letting that happen again.
I went to BK the other day and I usually get the Garden burger.. when I get home and bite into my burger. it was Sausage it make me sick to my stomach. I know boycott BK.. along with every other fast food joint.
The only problems I've had is with hidden ingredients, such as in this bread..(still not sure whether it was actually animal derived or vegetable), and also this peanutbutter which had some bad ingredients in it.......But I guess that's the bad side of being vegan , those are the only two instances. Never had any instances where I ate meat, so far... and hopefully never. Been vegan for a little longer than a month. So I havn't experienced many situations.
