My ex left me a wetsuit that he bought the last time he was in Hawaii. I found it yesterday while packing up some of his stuff. It was sweet of him. He knows I'm healthier when I can swim. I'm hoping this will extend the swimming season for me by a month, at least.

I've never used a wetsuit. Will it keep me warm enough so that my feet and ankles don't freeze? Just hang it on a line outside to drip dry when I'm done with it?

    Hi Blu3s,

Wetsuits. Always thoroughly wash, rinse, and dry a wetsuit. Especially in salt water from the ocean. They are very warm and
    insulating.

I didn't know about them and I suffered BIG TIME.

I was with friends at the beach north of San Francisco and we rented wetsuits. The ocean is cold there. I was in the surf, swimming and body surfing for hours before getting out for a late lunch. I didn't know to hose down and clean the wetsuit before putting it back on. I dawned the suit, exactly the way that it was, and spent another 6 hours in the ocean.

The next day I had to go to a doctor to find out what was wrong with my skin and my entire body. I was in pain and itching drastically for days. The doctor didn't know, either.

Sand and salt dry and congeal, and turn into very very hard very sharp micro crystals. (Little, sharp rocks.) Millions of them, against your skin and rubbing nonstop as you move and swim.

Salt. Sand. Dried mud. All grinning inside of a rubber suit against your body. Abrasive everywhere.

On TV, you see professionals peal off their suits and through them into a metal tank full of water to soak them, inside out. Drivers on boats. Later they hose them down, inside out and then throw them over a rope to dry, inside out. Its very important to always keep your wetsuit pure. Please know that. Please don't find out the hard way, like I did. It was tree days of pain and itching. Terrible. Don't go there. LOL

For your feet you can buy rubber booties that go under rubber flippers. Swim fins. And there are gloves or mittens and head hoods. Search for them on-line and even search used stuff.

Have FUN my friend. And for safety, always swim with a buddy.

Thanks, Kenny! Good info. I wish I lived near an ocean but I'll be using it in my swimming pool. It gets soo cold here in the mountains this time of year that the afternoon sun doesn't have time to heat up the water enough. I'm hoping this suit will extend the swim season for me.

Okay.. so wash inside and out and hang to dry. I'm sure chlorine will build up the way you talked about sand and sea salt. You probably saved me the itchies! Thanks!
