Learn Layla thats a good acoustic song to learn, or even "Fade to black" by Metallica.

Clapton is easy... It's basic blues stuff, then you can add on and add on... soloing and whatnot.

Are you guys more comfortable playing with your fingers or with a pick?
For a beginnger, I'm more comfortable with playing with my fingers because I cant seem to strum the guitar correctly with a pick. Is this a bad thing and should I start using a pick more?

i can play just fine and i never used a pick, except on electric sometimes, but i dont really like electrics anymore. i figured out the clap flatpicking style using my tumbs. i used to wonder the same thing when i started. guitar is easy if you love it enough and practice all the time.

The riff at the start of 'Layla' isn't exactly easy, IMHO.

I recently learned All Along the Watchtower. If you're familiar with the barre versions of Am, G and F you can do it too :p

Some Dead stuff is dead easy if you want just to play chordal accomaniments, esp. the old time rock n'roll numbers, and also many of their songs aren't that difficult. Many Bob Dylan numbers are really easy too - esp his early stuff.

It's just hammer-ons, the rest are mostly power chords and soloing, you get the hang of it after listening to it and if you watch him play it.

I like a bunch of Cat Stevens and James Taylor and Pink Floyd. Learn "Where Do The Children Play" and "Fire and Rain" and "Wish You Were Here" and you should be set.

Yeah, I like James Taylor quite a bit... I learned the blues genre by listening to Buddy Guy, Clapton, and SRV. Folk mostly just came to me, but it was mostly due to CSNY, The Byrds, Roger McGuinn, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Arlo Guthrie. Bluegrass due to Bill Monroe and a few independent musicians I've jammed with.

Yep, I believe around '67 or '68. I just like Tommy E's version the best. I've heard Doyle Dykes do a good cover, as well.
