I don't get how you can stand playing .010s. I can barely play .011s without breaking strings. .013s are my favorite.
I've played with both .011s and .012s... I got .010s the first time, 'cos they were the only ones I could find... I've gotten used to them and I like how they feel.
Changing strings is strictly an As-Needed thing. Ive noticed I am the only one using Adamas, which have the brighter sound and longer life on my acoustics, both six and twelve string. I dont break strings based on what size they are, I can go with anything from .009 to .011. I guess I broke strings when I didnt know how to bend them well, or if I was treating them too harshly. I havent broken a string in years, and even then I can "predict" when I will break one before a show, so it usually isnt a surprise, other than what song it will happen on. I keep an extra axe onstage in case, but usually will re-string a broken string onstage instead of swapping guitars. It takes about the same amount of time, as the SG is super easy to string up. Always gets a cheer when I get it done in only a verse or so, and can come back in for a lead!
Yeah, I can usually predict when I'll break one. I just don't like light strings. I can control bends and vibratos, but then again, light strings don't let me push my playing skills to the limit. I actually started playing on .008s, but I didn't feel like I was interacting enough. I like my action set high for slide. I've tried numorous Big Heart slides, but I've found I just prefer a stanley phillips head screwdriver.
Hrm. I use just .09's on my jackson, only because of the floyd rose though.. not arsed messing with the action and whatnot. Though saying that,I spent an hour last night adjusting it to my preferred action thing. And,Sg..being my other guitar,I use some D'addarios.. .10 up to .52. I like the balls from the low E. And I can tune it town to AADGBE. ...that is all.
Floyd Roses suck... mostly licensed ones. Hardtail Fenders, vintage Fender blocks, Wilkinsons, and Bigsby tremolos are where it's at for me.
