From what I read, it used to be green with grass one thousand years ago during the time of Eric the Red. The first European to step foot in the Americas.
That wasn't my point at all just to be clear. My point is that north west europeans that feel like they didn't get what they deserve if they can't fly at least twice a year to a beach holiday where they mostly hang and drink beer can at least be confronted with what they're really adding to. And yes, of course ideally act upon their conscience by, after they know, limit their flights to a minimim or change their beach destination so they can use other means of transport, etc. etc. (so many little changes do help) At least a couple of times. People doing nothing on their vacation is not an issue for me lol. People not giving a shit about their consumer or travelling behavior at all is becoming an issue for everyone.
Not really anymore I could look at my itinerary. I remember two places. Hammerfest was a must for religious reasons and we shipped out of Trondheim which is an old Viking ship town. I went to the church at Hammerfest that's said to contain Mjolnir. The only construction left standing in WW2 in the city because Himmler refused to blow it up because of its norse origins and mythology. Yeah, I do weird stuff on vacation. When I was old enough to experience Poland on our own, the only thing I wanted to do was go to see Auschwitz. Buf I'm a history buff like that. I need to see I need to experience it. Now many would say I'm sick because of that but not to me. I had experiences there you'd read in a ghost book.
I really want to travel where my granddaddy would have had his tank battles. I've researched old maps and have enough info to go to certain places according to division movements. I dunno, I just like standing in historic places. Good or bad. That church in Slovakia made from bones was pretty epic too. The Ossuary.
First thing I do when I go to the seaside is look for Blockhouses or Pillboxes I love air raid shelters too ever since I was a kid
I know a lot of younger people who do Caribbean cruises. Doesnt really interest me though. Especially with Caribbean cruises, you're stuck at sea a day getting to your destination and another for the return trip so for a 5 day cruise you're only docked and exploring land 3 days. And i've seen some cruises that have a day at sea in between ports so you're only docked 2 days. I guess people go on cruises more for the amenities than the actual travel but I would rather explore and see places rather than spend all that time getting drunk by a pool and playing shuffleboard.
That's not doing weird stuff on vacation! Many people do so, including me. I'm kind of done with european ww2 history though (i was really into it since a young kid, so my curuousity got at some point saturated (uhm you know what i mean ). Definitely can't say I enjoy visiting places like Auswitsch myself. It's useful though. So maybe that's what you mean with weird. I can see how some people would call it like that. History is one of the main reasons to travel for me and yeah, i also want stuff like actually touch that 3000 year old wall and not just look at it And of course standing into those old places makes you just wanna think how it exactly looked and was used and experienced back then. And the more you know in advance the more you find interesting about an at first crappy looking ruin
I like to go to warm places.. UK summers are crap! It does my health the world of good.. long flights are not good.. although I've persevered I find short flights better now.. probably my age
