My opinion is that there are two sides of the coin. I have been in a monogamous relationship for over 30 years and the experience is wonderful without a condom. Prior to that when I was in college, intimacy after a party or a sporting event, occasionally lead to an impulsive sexual encounter with an acquaintance or stranger. Many of these ladies became good friends, allowing a dialog about personal health and assurance that sex with them was a safe activity.
The use of condoms to avoid an STD is the only safety net.

Birth control is another issue and additional precautions beyond condoms have to be considered.
