Personally, I backcombed my hair with 3-4 inches of hair. I spent hours and hours backcombing with a friend and all the work just to come out over time. I essentially did that and when the came out, then just let the do their own thing. DON'T USE RUBBER BANDS. These will rip more hairs and cause more frizzies than you can imagine. I was under the impression in the beginning that you had to use these damn things(like so many). But everytime I took them for a week I would tons of loose hairs. So I would put them back in causing more hair to break and baby knots only to be ripped out when I took the bands out again. So finally I just left them out. Loose hairs were a plague for a about 2-3 weeks then they started disappearing right before my eyes. Where I had never had to rip dreads about before, I now have to do serious ripping daily. It unbelievable how much faster they dread without special products or procedures. Backcombing is generally a waste of time IMO PLUS it really makes a lot of hair fallout. They aren't going to look good right away no matter what you do. Plus with 3-4 inches of hair if hardly enough to make dreads with backcombing. Why don't you just start washing 1-2 times a week with Dr. Bronners now and stop combing your hair then my december you will be well on your way. If you don't have patient in the beginning you will never make to the end...no matter what method you choose. But if you insist on backcombing, then wait until you have 5-6 inches of hair. But the one thing you must understand is time and patients. They won't last 6 months without either.
