I had relatives with a gas station way back. Seems it was around $.29 a gallon. In the 70's I helped out with the first gas shortage. Had to wear a gun on the hip as you pumped gas and lay the hoses down on the cement when the tanks were drained so the people wouldn't think you were holding out on them. People would get very angry if you filled up an ambulance or firetruck... Gas was delivered in convoys. National guard escorted the tankers with trucks and jeeps on the ground and helicopters overhead. This was in the Pittsburgh area. Now I just got 18 gallons for $.09 a gallon! Came out to like a $1.81 with tax! Home Depot and Giant Eagle food stores ran a special where you got $.20 off a gallon for every $10.00 worth of Home Depot gift cards you bought. So we stocked up as we are remodeling our house!
Here in central Connecticut, I saw a station in Berlin and one in New Britain's south end who finally dropped to $1.999 for regular on Wednesday the 19th. YAY! I still remember when the same Berlin station went to $4.019 in June/July, on their way to about $4.259 or so. (It's pronounced BER-linn in CT, not like ber-LINN in Germany.) The lowest price I can remember? Probably about 86 cents a gallon in 1986, while making a visit to the Biddeford, ME area. Just this past Tuesday (November 18th) while visiting the north end of Brattleboro, VT, two stations near the rotary on US Route 5 at I-91 were still showing $2.159 while three stations along MA Route 2A in Greenfield, MA were at $1.999. Now for our Canadian and European friends to chime in with the price they've seen in liters!
Kids back then would pop wheelies on their bikes and land hard on the trigger thing to set the service bell off. Sometimes the attendant would come out and no car was there. .
