Please. A choice between a highly educated man and a pair of conservatives, one of which is lighter than a feather? You're on the wrong track there. People were so tired of ALL the republicans had done over the 8 years bush was in there ---Obama was the only choice.
Greed. Some are immune to it, but very few. Obama could almost be the average HF member today if he hadn't done politics: minority of rich mixed ancestry, had lots of live exeperiences including muslim schooling/interaction, slumming it, drug use/college life, generally helping people, legal interests and then politician, and suddenly BAM..... seantor, then prez. And when those two last things happened, he became increasingly PR minded and as such, hypocritical, such as not doing anything to end imprisoning people for smoking and sniffing the same drugs that he did. Now don't get me wrong, I'm NOT saying mccain would have been better, I'm glad that it was obama given the alternatives, but that still doesn't make me happy about his campaign's general attitude followed by what he did as a president. Maybe he could have not ONLY gotten the vote for being a better candidate than mccain, but also been honest..... "I'm going to subsidize big business and pray on the american people, but at least I won't declare gay people unpersons and put them in concentration camps, and I will never mention hockey or wasilla alaska" would have still gotten him the vote over john mccain
What's the point in blaming one person, especially for the current state of a country? (Especially one as messed up as the US.) Obama's just another head in the puppet show. As far as coming along and changing what's wrong with the country, his hands are tied. It's a person's own fault (disappointment) if they actually bought into the election trail rhetoric.
This. I get "you voted for Obama? You made a huuuge mistake," all the time. If voting for Obama was a mistake, that means the entire system is a sham. He was the best candidate at the time. ...Now, I'm pretty sure most of us would agree that the way the system is set up is indeed a sham. So why complain about one candidate ...complain about the entire system instead.
Reducing the influence of wealth on the political system is easy to say but how do you do it? Break the two party system, by bring in such electoral reform as proportional representation? A natural result of the influence of wealth. The lack of progressive alternatives is a result of the influence of wealth and the purging of left wing though in American society that took place from the 1940 to the present day. And with the media mainly in the hands of wealth them it is likely the populace will remain ignorant or at least misinformed. *
The big problem here is that from the very beginning the United States of America was set up with the interests of wealth in the forefront. It began as a property owning democratic republic, the Electoral College system was there as a block on the popular vote (the mob) and the Supreme Count which was to be appointed by and from the political establishment was presumed to always favour that political establishment and therefore be a check on radical change. I’ve suggested ways of curbing the influence of wealth (for example - http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/showpost.php?p=6840157&postcount=89 http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/showpost.php?p=6840160&postcount=90 But there would have to be a major shift in public opinion for them to be given an airing but let us say by some miracle they were voted for by a great majority of the US electorate and made into law, the political establishment would have them declare ‘unconstitutional’ by the Supreme Count.
Hah.... My state has these awesome rules to keep local campaign donations small, make you strictly record and turn over the detailed identifying info of your donors...... This is great for dems and republicans, except for the fact that all the local candidates are already independently wealthy and pay for their own campaigns. It sure does put my local non evil-ifying party in an awkward spot, having to turn over detailed campaign information on everyone and everything involved. So.... "hey, would you like to donate to our party, we want to force the PD to let you smoke pot.... cool, now we'll need 15 forms of ID and every ID number ever associated with your name"
I personally like Obama...I'll definitely vote for him in 2012. He has spent all of his time cleaning up after Bush, and everyone sees him as the bad guy
Obama is nothing more or less than the same old bought and paid for major party puppet- the difference being the superficial wrapper that seems to have some thinking that we've entered a "post racial" era which seems based on the premise that racial hatred and bigotry will be magically routed from every individual's private thoughts because we've elected a president who isn't white. It certainly appears that beyond appearances, the political game remains the same- and will continue to be so as long as enough sheeple buy into the fallacy that substantive positive political, social, and economic change will be achieved through the voting booth. The problem as I see it is that in order to make it on the ballot, senate, house, as well as presidential candidates need corporate money to fund their campaigns. Until corporate money can be extricated from the political process expect zero change in our favor. What will likely transpire will be the periodic shell game of campaign finance reform (do you REALLY expect them to bite the hand that feeds them?) and episodes of "Sheep Theater" in the form of Bank, Oil, and other big business "testimony" before special sessions of congress likely put on for the singular purpose of gulling us "livestock" into believing the complete fallacy that government gives a flying fuck about us. Yes, fuck Obama, but no more or less than fuck GWBush, Clinton, GHWBush, Reagan,... expecting meaningful change to happen by picking from the pre-corrupted list of puppets on the ballot is setting yourself up for a new round of disappointment.
yeah yeah I know.... he never meant to change shit.... He could have been worse, like mccain, him winning would have been VERY bad for america.... I have an irrational anger at him for doing what I knew he would, because I didn't want to think he would But still, fuck him.... I made this thread when I needed to rant after watching ten year old cars have their engines intentionally seized by grinning people in obama's name on youtube... I know cash for clunkers was bushes thing, but obama gave it the hard sell as part of the bailout package, and that's just another part of his change(of presidential paintjob).
Yes- but shit does... and that's what we've been grabbing at because it's all that's made available to us..
