pacificdude is an idealist and that's cool, the world needs more idealists. But lets be realistic for a second - if you see someone approaching you and your family and you know without a doubt they've come to kill, you aren't going to open your arms for a hug. I get where you're coming from in terms of violence begats violence and I agree, but at some point peaceful people reach a point when they have no choice but to respond with violence.

Trouble is that although we talk about destroying IS with warfare, we've been bombing them for some time now and it doesn't seem to be making any appreciable difference.

There's no real political or popular will to send in masses of troops again, so I think this could all drag on and on.
And even if we did invade once more, what happens when we go away again?

I don't have the answers to those questions, I'm just posing them because I don't think it's an argument about whether we try to talk to them or not. It's too late for that. But the attempts at sorting all this out by military means seem to be an ongoing failure. I suspect the politicians know this, but want to make it look like some action is being taken.

Moderate middle eastern countries are going to have to do this. If they don't, they will have to live with horrible consequences. They have a lot to lose. Everything, actually.

One problem there is that the Israelis wouldn't like a mass mobilization of Arab armies in the region.
It would also be difficult perhaps to get Sunni Muslim soldiers to fight against IS because they may actually sympathize with their declared objective of an Islamic caliphate.

That said, I think you're right that if it could be done, then it would be better if the regional powers acted.

Eventually someone is make the mistake of fooling around in a serious manner against Israel. I don't agree with how they treat the Palestinians, but I can certainly understand--

-----NEVER AGAIN. As soon as they get involved --------watch out.

The Islamic State group has released a video purportedly showing militants using sledgehammers to smash ancient artifacts in Iraq's northern city of Mosul.

The five-minute video shows a group of bearded men in a museum using hammers and drills to destroy several large statues, including one depicting a winged-bull Assyrian protective deity that dates back to the 9th century B.C.

The extremist group has destroyed a number of shrines -- including Muslim holy sites -- in order to eliminate what it views as heresy. The militants are also believed to have sold ancient artifacts on the black market in order to finance their bloody campaign across the region.

And who might those peaceful people be? The US??

How many innocent families have been slaughtered by the US and Israeli government in the Middle East?

It's really staggering that people think governments give a shit about their safety, much less those on the other side of the world.

If Saddam was still in power, the meltdown in Syria likely would have led to a Iran-Syrian war, which would have been far worse

The current goings on are horrendous, but still confined to the bumpkin parts of both countries

Your country invading Iraq probably did save millions of lives

There are many idealists on this site (and elsewhere :p). I consider you and myself ones as well. I sometimes think and say naive stuff too. I guess it comes from wishful thinking...

I think if you ask one of the civilians who stil have their life thanks to it you will get a different opinion.

Not sure Arabs care about that. As long as they're not attacking Israel I don't think Israel would react aggressively against arab armies getting mobilized to fight against ISIS.

This seems a bigger deal. Which seems kind of strange to me because isn't a legitimate caliphate supposed to have an ancestor of a prophet as a leader.

The certainty you proclaim your convictions with is sometimes (like in this case) already a bit dubious. Some people with money WILL collect and buy the most controversial stuff. Also, the question you connect to it makes no sense and is a bit disturbing if you mean that. You seem to imply that people who acknowledge that the strangest things are being sold on illegal markets are sheep or something for not asking questions. While this certainty that they're not seems all between your ears.
