You are correct. My mistake. The Gospel is Jesus words and that is when the Gospel started. However, Jesus stated that the Gospel (His message) would be preached to the whole world. Did they happen in his generation... Not even close.
I see what spook is saying... its like some people are worshipping a book more than the god that was behind it. Just because the book may have several contradictions and lies doesnt meen the god doesnt exist. Even though I am not a Christian I understand that. Because the book was written by MAN and translated thus there are going to be some errors because it was written by humans. You can say they were "divinely inspired" but they are not perfect thus there will be some mistakes. Unless it was wr itten by the hand of god(which it wasnt) there will be errors.
It is not that we worship the book but rather where we are guided to live are lives. If are lives are soley based all on this book it better be true. Although men did write the Bible, the Bible itself says that it was INSPIRED by God. It also says God is perfect and without error. If God inspired a book with an error than the book is a lie. But I tell you there is no error in that book and I will live my life by that book hopefully until the day I die.
The point I've been pursuing here is indeed one of enduring faith, in the face of the very real fact that God isn't an on-demand order-supplier for mankind. Regarding prophecies...OK, they're there in the Bible and clearly identifiable...no argument from me. Some Christians believe that they were spoken in reference to events of Jesus's time, some believe they apply to today's events, some view them as metaphoric, symbolic, or mystical, some just ignore them. The whole idea is that every human being has free will, and God, as God, certainly has the perogative to exercise his own supreme free will in response to the free-will actions of mankind in general or as individuals ...check out the Old Testament ...Moses, the Ten Commandments, and the Golden Calf come to mind. So, if God chooses to not fullfill certain apparent prophecies, or to act in unprophesied ways, it doesn't make him a liar...it simply underscores the fact that he is God, and is not obligated to display actions...miracles...on the stage of the material world, even though he may have indicated that he would. IMO, faith based largely on prophecy regarding apocalyptic events is superficial faith, because it gives the backseat to the real eternal spiritual relationship that lies beyond the apparent...to put it in Christian terms, if God does not fulfill these prophecies that are regularly debated here, will that diminish or destroy your relationship with Jesus Christ? If you answer yes, you need to re-examine your whole faith structure. The most telling passage in the Gospels in this regard: St. Luke, Chapter 17, Verses 20 & 21: 20. And, when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the Kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The Kingdom of God cometh not with observation: 21. Neither shall they say "Lo here! or Lo there! For, behold, the Kingdom of God is within you. I got out my dictionary first...
Yeah but MAN who did the actual writing and translating are not perfect. if they were inspried by god then they had to be perfect for a little while... but according to you no man is perfect except Jesus. Spook is just saying God can do what he want, if he doesnt want to fullfill some prophecies made thousands of years ago then he wont. Hes GOD. it doesnt make him a liar he just changed his mind, like he did about the Sabbath, and eye for an eye.
Why better it be true? And what is 'it'? Funny that by saying 'men wrote the bible' you have the ignorance to follow it up with 'the bible itself says'. Uhhh, Houston? It is made up of many texts which while connected in that they serve God are uniquely different. Jews keep scripture very seperate, whereas Christias lump it all together and call the bible 'It'. I think there are many Xtians out there believing in a squarity, Father, Son, Holy Ghost and the bible. The words and actions of Jesus Christ are selfless to the core. Even if it were all a lie, the person of Jesus Christ is without question the model for perfection within humanity. It's like you are saying its a holeproof bible or no faith altogether...it really then is that you are putting your God to the test. If he doesn't come through he's not good enough for you? I dunno...it says we are made in His image..if we are fallible then how is he not? Inspiration in no way intimates ownership or authoring. Inspiration is subjective rather than objective. I've been inspired by many people but that didn't give them control over what they inspired me to do. And if your line of thinking is so solid to you how do you ignore that since God created everything, isn't it all inspired by him...even the bad stuff? As a believer I can't help but feel like you're trying to humanize God in everything you post, and like in your subconscious reasoning the bible enables you to put a control on God's sovereignty. There is no error in that book says you? But you have to say that as you've exposed that you can't be a believer if it contains an error. And here is the kicker...GOD right...almighty GOD is the inspiration behind these words that men wrote (much of the OT being history, tradition and religious observance) and yet while on the earth as Jesus didn't physically write anything himself. So why would God as one unseen inspire so many scrolls in the OT only to come down physically to inspire a NT, but not physically write any of it? Hmmmm...Cuz He's smart! Who knows how many writers of the OT were Dvid Koresh type cats. As long as God didn't write any of it he doesn't have to be bound to it!
Use it often so you never forget it. Great post by the way. Articulate and very evidential. God is God. God is not only what the bible says he can be, as it is universally agreed that it is written by men. And while they were definitely inspired, those men do not have the right to ever say that it is the universal truth straight from God himself. You just could not...I mean if that were the case God would just write the book himself and plant a tree where we could go pick it up anytime we wanted... hey theres a thought...rather than just give the tree of eternal life and tree of knowledge, why not give a tree with a manual so we would know that a snake was not to be trusted and that he was evil. Hmmm...I best stop that line of thought...
Christian brothers and sisters and all other brother and sisters who hate bigottry. Do not post on this thread any longer. You keep pushing that horrible message back up higher on the forum. I realize I just did that myself. If you don't hate Christians and just want a debate post a new thread. Thanks all.
I disagree. I asked God if it was all right to do so. God told me it is true. There are many times that you should not mention the truth. You have sat at dinner with family before and not said something that would hurt someone at the table, although it was true. I don't think God would have started our conversation without reason. God cares about everything. Not really. The important thing is that I love God and rely on God's guidance (and love) in all aspects of my life.
Then I think I would start reconsidered things. But I see stuff even today. The Jewish people are constantly return to the land of Israel... just as the Bible stated in detail... all of that amazes me.
I would say that most of the people posting, regardless of religion does feel that thread topic "Fuck Christianity" is uneeded. The poster MichaelByrd has not been here since and we have evolved into many discussions out of it. If God has men write down His promises in a Book, and then does not keep those promises. God would be a liar. Yet God has always followed through, and that is why the Bible can be trusted. Prodigal children if followed the Biblical example would confess their sins, and give their life to Christ. Yet this world is not about to do that. And if they wait to do that until after they die, Scripture states, it will be to late. And that is why the Bible tells you, now is the day of salvation, now is the appointed time. And the only way you could believe that God is going to give the world a pass, is if you believe God is a liar. The Devil told eve the same thing in the garden. Christ stated just the oppsite. And Christ has stated that most of this world is going to Hell. When God told Noah that He was going to spare his family and destroy all human life on earth by a flood, God was true to His Word. Only Noah and His family survived.
The ignorant credit the devil with (some of) God's acts. There are many souls that accuse God's acts of evil, and credit a non existent being as the source of the actions that they do not approve of or understand because of their ignorance and lack of faith in God. To the pure, all things are pure.
You people say that the worst thing that the devil can do is make you believe that he doesn't exist... Yeah, but what about God, he hasn't proven himself either...
Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner Depends on what you mean by the "Devil". If you mean a fictional entity mentioned in the bible, yes. If you mean God, yes. If you mean a real entity that only wants the worst possible lives for most creatures in existence and only plots ways to make everyone miserable because it hates everyone, no*. *But I didn't mention Stewie Griffon, although I think he only wants to kill his mom, and some doctors, etc. Well, anyone that gets in his way. Now sometimes I think about wanting to kill everyone, but I never would. I don't like sad frightened souls. Depressing as all hell. But thinking about being evil is fun (sometimes) (like thinking about laying waste to a city or being a vampire, but I wouldn't actually want to do it.... or would I?). Hey, JDFU, I just thought of something really funny. What if you and Campbell opened up JDFU (Jesus Died For University)? Lol...
