Soldier dude....there are quite a few European countries that grant amnesty to soldiers that desert the military. All you really need is a passport, but you don't even need that in many countries (altho how you'd get over there without one is beyond me )....There's a list in 'Steal This Book', but that's quite outdated...search the governments of Holland and the Netherlands, and I think Denmark is one too. You do realise aswell that his family and friends will get shit for him not going to war, but i say go for mate. Inform your loved ones first tho, so they know what to expect from other people in there town, cos if the people that live around your family are for Bush, then your loved ones are in for some hard times i'd guess. this is just an assumption tho. oh yer, if you do everything that guy said that his relative did to get out of fighting in vietnam, then your going to get your arse handed to you on a platter! No no no....I wouldn't tell your family if they all suport Bush, etc etc...they could call someone in the military and they could prevent you from flying. I'd leave first, without telling anyone, unless you share this feeling with a friend or something, and then after you get citizenship, call then....but you'd wanna start looking into those other countries now....when are you supposed to leave?

The safest countries are those with which America has mutual offense treaties such as Cuba, North Korea, and those beyond the so-called Iron Curtain (irrelevant to now..). The next safest are countries unfriendly to the U.S.....Algeria was a popular runaway for a few decades. Sweden will provide political asylum for draft dodgers and deserters. It helps if you have a passport, but even that isn't necessary since they are required by law to let you in. There are now about 35,000 exiles from the Pig Empire living in Sweden (early 70s..) The American Deserters Committee, Upplandsgaten 18, Stockholm, phone 08-344663 will provide you with immediate help, contacts and procedural information. If you enter as a tourist with a passport, you can just go to the local police station, state you are seeking asylum and fill out a form. They stamp your passport and this allows you to hustle rent and food from the Swedish Social Bureau. It takes six months for you to get working papers that will allow you to get employment, but you can live on welfare until then with no hassle. Hmm...check out that committee, I'm sure the phone number is old, but there must be some type of organization over there like that...also check into their laws and find out what it means that "by their law, they must allow you, etc etc"... here's some more from my bible, about great Canadia (this is what it was like during Vietnam..I don't know what the new treaty between the two countries does, but if you say you're a tourist, I don't see why they wouldn't let you in): Do not tell the officials at the border that you are a deserter, as they will turn you in. Pose as a visitor. To work in Canadia you have to qualify for for landed immigration status under a point system....(there's a bunch of stuff about this point system, but I don't even know if its still around). The best approach if you are considering going to Canada is to write, or better yet visit, the Montreal Council to Aid War Resisters, Case Postale 5, Westmount, Montreal, 215 Quebec, or American Deserters Committee, 3837 Blvd, Saint Laurent, St Louis, Montreal 3, Quebec. (These are probably in a different area now, and possibly they don't exist anymore). In any event, no one should renounce their citizenship until they have qualified for landed imigration status as that would classify the person as a non-resident and make it possible for the Canadian police to send you back. From a former USN HM2 Field Med/Psych Tech. First off, ignore the hatebreeders here. They are ignorrant and utterly blind to the realities of war. To them it's just an argument to try and win on some message board, it's no more real to them than their favorite barbie doll. The completely nuts cop won't work. Period. Those illnesses are too easily recognized as real or fake and you just don't have the time to read up on it and rehearse. The end result would be that it would be like sugarmaggie talks about because of the various drug treatments they'd give you. What will win you a trip to the psych ward is becoming an alcoholic real quick. What I mean is you need to get good and drunk and get into an 'alcohol related incident''. while you're on duty. If you have no duty between now and then, get lit, go knock over your CO's yard gnomes, piss in his mailbox, etc.. Get in trouble in a bar, get thrown in the drunk tank. Make sure you get busted. When you sober up ask to see a doc and start spilling the beans about your alcohol problem. That you think you might need treatment. Man, you've been a drunk since early high school every weekend you go through two fifths of whiskey and a case of beer, during the week you like to have a pint of vodka around etc... . If they give you space between jail and seeing the doctor, make sure to show up with liquor on your breathe and a BAC to go with it. Once they release you from rehab. do it again. repeat. Sooner or later they boot you for rehab failure.Chronic alcoholics are unfit for duty. Also, do you get regular piss tests? If so, start smokin' alot of pot and show up drunk. I saw alot of people get kicked out for both of these things. Outside of that, I'd say check into the links some people provided and your options for getting out of country as well because you might simply not have time to pull the above off. I just want to thank everyone again for your kind remarks. I want to give a big thanks to soul rebel and pear tree philosophy. I'm not even going to waste my time arguing with gate. Soul rebel thanks for all the info in case i do have to leave the states. I hav'nt decided which country would be best. I just hope it does'nt come to that. If I do get out i know i will have to move away from my town but i was planning on doing that any way in the near future. I've been trying to get out for the last year and have been catching hell from some of the people in the unit. People i thought were freinds are starting to turn against me. I even had a guy i don't even know come up to me and call me a coward. If only he knew the whole story.... The homosexual thing wouldn't work although another soldier wanted to try it with me. He's not wanting out for the same reasons I am. Pear tree philosophy i may try what you reccomended. It's a very clever idea. I do smoke weed and have did some other things as well. So I probably will fail the next drug test. I do have a plan that may work it's already in the works but I don't feel secure in telling anyone right now. but if I do get out you guys will be the first to know if i did and how I did it.
