    An Eye for an Eye

"You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.' But I tell you, don't resist him who is evil; but whoever strikes you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also. If anyone sues you to take away your coat, let him have your cloak also. Whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. Give to him who asks you, and don't turn away him who desires to borrow from you." A quote from Jesus Christ. Matthew 5:38-42

"Christian" would mean you follow the words and teachings of Jesus Christ. "Eye for an eye" is from the old testament, and has nothing to do with the 10 commandments.

And on this lame ass issue of whether that commandment is "thou shall not kill" or "thou shall not murder" ....Whenever you intentionally take the life of someone else, that qualifies as murder. So unless you're fighting a war against evil terminator-style robots from the future, war IS murder. You can't get off with a technicality on that one.

Personally, I think its absolutely blasphemous to use "one nation under god" and yet continue to commit such atocities under his name.

"Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account."

well, you've got your old testament christians and your new testament christians. i prefer being of the latter group. i like the peace of christ better than the harsh judgements and bizarre violence of the OT. but when discussing something like the 6th commandment, one must also look to the rest of the text in which it resides. let us not forget that "to every thing there is a season," and that includes violence. i've never wanted to hurt anyone in my life, but i have a baby in the house and if someone tries to attack my family, i'm not gonna be all pacifist on them, i'm probably gonna shoot them. it's just commmon sense.

"CHRISTIAN" refers to Christ, not to the OT.

It was also pointed out to me that the old "eye for an eye" refers to God's judgement on people, not that people can go out killing or seeking revenge. What exactly does defending you family have to do with that, anyway?

At least in America you have the option of not saying the pledge, in France it is a CRIME to "Boo" or disrespect the "La Marsillle" (National anthem) in any way or form.

did you not see the reference to jesus telling you to turn the other cheek? i'm not gonna do it, not when my family is at risk.

not true. there are many christian churches and christian themselves who study the OT more than they study the NT. i suppose the one i know the most about is the seventh day adventists. they point to the quote by jesus saying that "i do not come to end the law but to fulfill it." (along those lines, it's pretty close). they interepret this to mean that jesus wishes us to maintain the laws of the old testament. while i'm sure this may be true to some extent, some of the laws are just pretty common sense, i think some modern interpretation won't go amiss, either.
