I go barefoot a lot, but during the winter I like to wear my sandals because there's a lot of snow here (though sometimes my husband makes me wear boots when its 10 degrees or below lol). I work from home, so no problem with shoes there. In restaurants here, its a health code violation to be barefoot. So, I usually wear shoes while out, because you get kicked out of almost everywhere and I live in the city where's theres tons of glass and debris (I live on a road where there are many factories, so the trucks leave a lot behind ).
I hope I don't sound like a know-it-all, but there is no health code that prohibits customers from going barefoot in a restaurant. The only regulations I am aware of are for employees only and they are set by OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration). If you want to double check (because things may have changed since I last checked) you can visit the Society for Barefoot Living at http://www.barefooters.org They have lots of infoo about these matters. Peace and barefoot freedom to you.
Yes. PLEASE don't believe -- or REPEAT -- the MYTH that there are health department regulations that say people have to wear shoes in various public places. This is simply untrue. It's the bullshit excuse that people who don't like to see others barefoot use to force them to put on shoes. -Jeffrey
Jeffrey and Earthwalker are absolutely correct about there being no health codes anywhere that prohibit customers from being barefoot in restaurants or any other business. Here's a direct link for a letter from the Department of Public Health in your state: http://www.barefooters.org/health-dept/KY2002.pdf You could always print that letter and carry it with you to prove there are no such regulations.
A reason people get this idea: Places like grocery stores post little signs that demand you wear shoes, when in reality these have no legal validity. If you go to these same stores, you'll also notice they claim they're not liable if a shopping cart hits your car. This isn't true. How do I know? My brother is a lawyer and does these sort of cases. Unless there is a state or fed document they can cite, it's crap.
Thats why customers need legal protection from such stupid store owners and their idiotic excuses. Otherwise they could bar people from coming in for ANY reason, like they could say you need to wear a bra or have pink hair or wear a dress just to come in. I think unless youre actually causing a disturbance then you should be able to go in anywhere wearing whatever you want and the store owner shouldnt be able to do jack about it.
there are some stores that have the sign "We have the right to refuse service to anyone" what ever the hell that is supposed to mean.
They shouldnt just be able to arbitraily boot someone out just for any old reason. I think there needs to be some guidelines as to who how and when people can be denied service so that store owners dont take their personal grudges out on people and kick out well meaning customers. I understand the store owner has rights but then again the customer does as well. I just think the person needs to actually be causing a disturbance or harming someone or damaging merchandise or breaking the law or something like that in order to be denied service or booted out.
