I mean fasted. Not in a fed state. On an empty stomach. Say you work out in the morning (or in my case, the evening) a little bit after waking up, and you put off eating until AFTER you train. I personally work out better fasted, and a lot of people swear by it. Plus it coincides with increased HGH and is better for fat burning.

I most often use a 45 lb. one. However, if you're new to kettlebells, you might want to start with something lighter until you develop a good form. Form is important when doing KB swings to get the most out of them. They double as both an excellent strength and cardio workout.

as in not eating for some time beforehand? i usually exercise about 2 hours after lunch, just because that's when i am usually able to sneak down to the gym. the ideal time for me would be 3 or 4 hours after eating, but i would never get through a routine at that time without being interrupted 10 times.

yeah, although it's rarely planned. something always comes up that keeps me from the gym for a week, usually more often than when i actually need a break anyway.

My off days from weights are the days I do HIIT. But I also usually take 1-2 days off per week from all training. I usually lift 2-4 days a week and do cardio 2-3 days a week. Every couple of months I will take about an entire week off just to rest and recover. Lately I have been averaging one day off per week from weights and cardio because I am trying to meet some goals by summer, so I have been training harder.

I thought you meant that, was making sure. man, no I don't do that but can see straightaway the benefits.

before I started to lift i went on a 19 day water only fast to detox, by day 8 I had a fever and was puking up bile. by day 19 I felt reborn.

I've never done any prolonged fasts, just intermittent. The most popular seems to be the 16 hour fast with an 8 hour eating window, which most people do 5-7 days a week. Others seem to prefer to do 1-2 twenty-four hour fasts per week. This is normally what I do, so I usually work out after having fasted 12-24 hours, then usually eat within an hour of completing my workout.

I couldn't imagine that kind of fasting being good for retaining muscle mass, and I don't think I could (or would want to) fast any more than a day or two. I am sure it really cleans you out, though.

you're right about that. after it, if you fasted long enough, your body will actually pack on muscle more efficiently.

    Ok guys

The week off ended today and it was back to work in the gym.

I came back stronger and did the most weight on the bench press ever for 8 reps. new pr

Also my push pull leg routine is now on deck

today day was push, basically chest, shoulders and tris...since I am hitting these muscle groups twice a week I lower the volume just a tad....felt good coming out after a long week off.

    gainnnzzzz

I have to agree. As much as I respect pushing your body to the max, I'm way too obsessive compulsive about the treatment of my body to be willing to do something like that.

My muscles need nutrients to get started for the day otherwise I feel terrible and I would imagine working out on top of that would only make my body feel super neglected and "starvation mode" ready.

Well, it really does depend on the type of fasting and the extreme to which it's done. Intermittent fasting actually increases HGH levels which leads to muscle growth. These fasts are generally 14-24 hours, though -- not days or weeks.

The good thing about being fat-adapted is that your body does not burn muscle in a non-prolonged fasted state, but rather stored body fat, while simultaneously sparing muscle. So IF is actually very good for getting lean while preserving muscle mass.

I personally always work out in a fasted state -- consuming nothing beforehand but coffee (w/coconut oil), BCAA's and yohimbe -- but everyone is different. Still I would encourage people to try working out in a fasted state at least once, but not until they become fat-adapated, which means restricting carbs over a period of time until one's body becomes adapted to burning its own fat stores for energy so there isn't that risk of entering starvation mode.
