One fitness center I went to some years ago had a 'no outside shoes' rule and didn't like me being in there barefoot when I came from outside. When I promised to clean my feet at the door (using wetwipes or a moist wash cloth, in the area where others changed their outside shoes for indoor ones) they didn't mind so much, although they still looked at me funny. A bit weird, since barefoot PE was pretty common when I was in school, and people generally aren't anti-barefoot, but at least the thing about cleaning my soles was consistent with their shoe policy.

Me neither, sad to say. Stores like that are so wealthy they don't care about losing the odd customer here and there. And let's face it there are so few of us that losing alll our custom would make no difference overall:(

What kind of pedals do you have that you use barefoot? I usually use my Vibram's for biking, but plan to get some cycling sandals soon so that my feet can be more free and open yet still use my SPD clipless pedals.

I know they don't like "street shoes" in the group fitness center.... I don't know... I went in barefooted again yesterday, and nobody said anything. I can't imagine having to clean my feet every time I went in :p

I'm really not sure. They came with the bike, so I guess they're pretty basic pedals. They feel good on the feet, and I have much better grip when I've no shoes on :)

I know, right? Dirt doesn't come off my feet easily. Shoes would get much more caked with dirt. Plus, I use my shoes for planting, and they get pretty dirty with that. At least feet are routinely cleaned when I shower, unlike sneakers which never get cleaned.
Yeah, and when I worked at a supermarket, I didn't give a fuck when people walked out with bottled water that I forgot to add to the price. I would just say, "oops. Well, I guess they'll be pleasantly surprised when they find they got free water" :) Or when I let a woman use tons of coupons to turn a $50 bill into a $4...It must've taken so much coupon clipping and planning for that- how could I tell her that we have a 3 coupon policy?? :p
It's a wonder my boss didn't want me to quit.... She just wanted my cheap labor, even if I cost the store tons of money from not caring enough :bobby:

Went to a 7-Eleven today with my daughter to get some fountain drinks. Here's how my conflict went down with the 30 year old black female behind the register

Cashier: Just to let you know for next time, you need shoes before you come in here.

    Me: No I don't.

C: Yes, we serve food here.

M: That's for you. You handle the food.

    C: Well, it's for hygiene.

M: I'm not touching the food with my feet.

At this time she moves back from the register to lean against the back counter. She says to her co-worker, a gray haired lady about 70 y/o,

C: Yep, it's going to be one of those Fridays!

I check the front door for a NBF sticker (not that I would follow it)

M: Besides, there's nothing on the door that says I can't

As I leave she says in a sarcastic voice," HAVE A GOOD DAY, SIR!"

    Me: You too.

    Score: Me 2...Society 0

I had the "we serve food here" comment once, and I said, "how will my feet affect the food being served here"? All the food is packaged right? The clerk did not have an answer.

So the next time you get that reason, just ask it in that way and see what happens.
