k I'm not going to try to quote because just am lazy 1. I'm aspergers, way on the normal side of the autistic spectrum 2. one of the classes required for teachers in nevada has the 6 intelligences as part of it's curriculum (my mom took the class, I hung out in the back and just listened) I don't know about other places but in the school district I've been stuck in I have heard so damn much about how athletes are smarter than me because they can catch a fucking ball, I'm a little bit bitter.

That's so funny, when I was in third grade they gave me the iq test at school and they gave me a 130...then my parenst took me to some place outside of school to take it again and got like 147 or something...I always thought that was weird but I guess it makes sense now lol.... About the original post...well let me ask you this...did men or women develop the iq test? Men and women think at least slightly differently...so if the test is aimed at male specific intelligence then I guess more men would be "geniuses"...they still turn into babies when they have to change a poopy diaper but I digress Seriously, I could give a shit less because I have an iq I don't have to be ashamed of, but still you have to consider all the variables..not just come on here and start talking about the "bullshit politically correct society" First of all you're wrong...society is NOT politically correct. Secondly, most of the people you call "politically correct" are just nicer than most of the assholes in the world. I mean think about it, you can try not to offend people, or you can be an ass. Most of the time it's not neccesary to spout every opinion you have on a subject...I've noticed it's mostly people like that who want to talk all derogatory about people who try not to be assholes in their day to day life
"1. I'm aspergers, way on the normal side of the autistic spectrum" Hey my brother is too! I think he's borderline actually autistic, but they call it aspergers...he's almost twenty one now and I don't think he could be as articulate as you..of course I've never looked at his forums and he goes to some so I hope he is and just doesn't let us know...I would ask if you were him but you're too young lol.
Well this is sort of on topic but more an inquiry, perhaps someone here can shed a little light on a mystery to me. A few years ago I was working as a dispatcher for a private ambulance company. I'd work 72hr shifts over the weekends(slept there). Well my employer got it in his head that I was a genius and paid for a day long battery of tests through a local head candler. He then gave me an 80hr shift prior to the tests. I swear I only got about 2hrs worth of good rem sleep, and maybe a total of 5hrs rest the entire time as things were jumping and I was the only one there on 4 phones and 3 dispatch terminals. Immediately after this fine ordeal I had to go take the tests without any sleep. To make a long story short(I'm trying), I passed out a few times, started to see shadow hallucinations, etc... but the tests went on. The end result was a grand score of 139 as an IQ. My take on this was that the candler was in it for the cash and didn't care that I had not slept decent, was passing out, yada yada. Seems like common sense to me that the sleep deprivation would affect my mental functions but I was told it didn't matter. Like I said, I think the candler was in it for the $$$$ and had his appointment calendar already booked. Rather than tell me to get some sleep, he just proceeded. I've also been told I can't take these tests again for at least another year in order for them to be accurate. My take is that the whole thing was a wasted effort. To what extent is sleep, nutrition (i.e. is the person dehydrated?), and social stress taken into account?
lol, I was lead in just told I would have to answer some questions got super paranoid and then the dude busted out dice (really cool spacial problems, it was nifty) Yeah I can't imagine doing any sort of anything on that little sleep (of course by 24 hrs even fully medicated I'm getting near redline on seizures) think of it this way 140 is genius and there is an inordinatly large margin of error Men came up with the tests, well yeah that's about it, they certainly followed proper laboratory procedures though (testing the test on male as well as female "focus groups") I've met a lot more stupid guys than stupid girls, but I've also met a lot more uber extraordinary guys than girls, it's sort of like autism (gender roles reversed) in that many more males are autistic but the most sever section of the autistic spectrum (starts w\ r I have a book somewhere) is almost exclusivly female; there are more smart women in the world than smart men but there are more uber smart men, that's just my experience, could very well mean that those few uber smart women kick the shit out of a bevvy of ubersmart men I don't know, what I do know is female cryptographers usually go nuts but they also aren't the accredited names on the big systems, again maybe they were better and they guys just pushed themselves till they snapped and the woman realized there was a world outside her work, I don't know Wow I rant and go off on tangents all on my own, I really do need adult supervision
er dont you realise, that men making the test should make men beat women overall, not beat women AND loose to women. it seems you are lacking a little in your logic skills, star farie or maybe im just judging you on too much of a male scale. if the iq test was veered for male benefit, then men would win over women, which is not the case. political correctness is not niceness. the whole point of political correctness is that its not a genuine thing, its the rules that you need to follow in 'politics' (not just govt politics, but social polotics). political correctness is degenerative, it just masks oppinions and problems and so no one learns, or understands, and it creates the wrong rift, instead of being between people's genuine oppinions, it classes people under how 'politically' correct they are, ie, the way they communicate ideas. its a bad, bad thing, political correctness. the ideals that a lot of political correctness upholds ar good, but then a lot is bullshit and just prevents problem from being actually solved or understood.
okay then take 6 numbers and get a geometric mean, (it's so much niftier than arithmatic mean) use the 6 intelligences, test them all, average them, there you go, U.Q. Uber Quotient
"er dont you realise, that men making the test should make men beat women overall, not beat women AND loose to women. it seems you are lacking a little in your logic skills, star farie or maybe im just judging you on too much of a male scale. if the iq test was veered for male benefit, then men would win over women, which is not the case." Yea I guess if all women were exactly the same and all men were exactly the same....besides I only ASKED if mostly men came up with it...I wasn't stating a fact. perhaps you are lacking in your logic skills? Or maybe I'm just being politically correct by saying that everyone is an individual (instead of in the man box or the woman box)and that would account for the differences in scores. Try to understand that not all women are the same and not all men are the same, you'll learn that when you grow up
it really doesn't matter who created the tests if they were tested with proper laboratory procedures (I believe they were but I could be wrong) the guinea pigs gender proportions we should care about if we're worried about that accuracy
I don't blame you. At my children's junior High, athletics are more prized than intellect, and I HATE this. So what is someone can throw a ball or run quickly? IMO, they contrilbute nothing to society at all. I think our societies attitude of beatifying athletes is quite misguided. For the most part, athletes are spoiled idiots who get their entire life handed to them on a platter and have to work little for what they get. Jock oriented schools make me sick.
Fortunatly my highschool wasn't like that from a student end (although the teachers for the most part were awful), just elementary and middle (a long 9 years)
I have never taken an IQ test, so my knowledge on the subject is limited...but I will offer an opinion. I tend to think that an IQ test is like any other "standardized test". I think that it basically tests a person's ability to take a test, NOT the person's capacity of knowledge or IQ. Which is why I believe that the SAT/ACT is a load of bull.
But is this a reflection of fundimental differences between a man and a woman, or a reflection of how society expects men and women to think? Society expects women to be intelligent, but sensible. Smart, but reasonable. Girls are expected to be yuppies, get good grades in school, toe the line, get a good job and push the glass celing, becomeing lawyers and doctors and corporate CEOs. Someone earlier mentioned how girls outnumber guys in honors classes - I'm a high school senior and see this too. While doing what one is told and memorizing text books isn't intelligence as much as hard work, anticipating what the teacher wants in order to earn your grade of choice is. As for guys, in high school there are two main expectations: the jock or the class clown are the norm. The football "scholar" or the smartass kid who "does not work to his potential". But a guy who is academically bright without being a jock or a smartass is automatically nerdy, while girls who are get good grades are "smart". While the IQ test has flaws, it is still a decent - if not perfect - measurement of intelligence. The difference between male and female IQ scores has anything to do with the way they were raised to think - by their peers, their parents, and society at large.
I think both sports, academic intellect, and the arts contribute equally to society, and they all should be treated equally in the school system. Every student in school should be able to find their talent and express themselves in the way that they can, no one department getting any more attention than the others.
This whole thing is sort of positive towards males and negative towards females therfore it will get negative responses here.
This reminds me of a lecture by Nobel laureate James D. Watson, who co-discovered DNA. He said his IQ was not that high and that he was no genius, but that he was always intellectually curious and an avid reader. This is something to think about!
This is a very interesting thread. The original post pointed out that genuis is 10 times more likely in males than females. The fact that autism is more common in males is fascinating. What can be considered a genetic disorder is part of the connection to genius Someone already pointed out Bill Gate's IQ Probably most of you know that Bill Gates is mildly autistic (Asperger's Syndrome) . It is suspected that Einstein had Asperger's, too. In that case why feel threatened by the fact that genius may occur more frequently in males? I worry more about the larger number of boys with profound autism, learning disabilities and adhd. As was already discussed, giftedness is directly related to all of these conditions. Seems like a terrible price to pay for genius. (eta-not to say that this children are terrible in any way, they are sweet and gifts to there families. it's just that life can be so hard for them. they suffer higher incidence of depression, that's the high price to pay, What is genius worth if you can't be happy?) I also believe that there are many forms of intelligence. There are many things to excel in. Mathematical/spatial intelligence is just one part. Celtgrrl, great that you work with autistic children and feel you can relate to them even if it's only in the mildest way. I believe that there is a HUGE range of severity in autism. My boy displays autistic traits, but has yet to be diagnosed at 8 years old. It's obviously pretty mild, but he's done all the echolia and lining up toys (especially when he was a little younger, he's growing out of it a little) I might start a thread about this topic in Parenting, I'd love to get the opinions of people with experience in autistic spectrum disorders, especially you and maggie. I don't want to hijack this thread. kathy
but him and his buddy crick screwed a woman (I think she had a name w\ an R in it) out of the nobel prize, she was the one who knew that the x-ray chromatograph would relay the shape, she even suggested a helix, they just took her reaserch and beat her too it (she was right down the hall they used her equipment) because she couldn't get a good enough sample of dna for the chromatograph
