Mission Of Burma, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Cure, Bad Religion, Black Flag, Minor Threat, The Clash, Faith No More, My Bloody Valentine, Joy Division, The Pixies, Run DMC ...who says 80's music sucked!? Probably three of the grestest bands of all time were around in the 80's; DEAD KENNEDYS, SONIC YOUTH, THE SMITHS.
Hmm I'd have to say Soul Asylum, the Clarks and the Violent Femmes off the top of my head. There are probably a lot more that aren't popping into my head right now. GnR had some good rock music but (sorry) am not a huge fan of Axl. I just saw Motley Crue live a couple weeks ago. I'm afraid to say they were really bad and Vince has pretty much lost any vocal ability he may have had. I didn't expect them to sound so bad - yikes! I wasn't too into the hair metal stuff anyway although it sounds like my childhood so it is good for nostalgia
I'd have to give some props to the Pogues as well, and Ozzy's real solo career(I loved Randy Rhoades). Preist, the Grateful Dead's only commercial success (and I had MTV at the time, so I remember thinking "this is the band that did Workingman's Dead??" Good on the person who noted Phish...back whe they were fantastic. Billy Bragg, too. Anyone remember Krokus?
stevie ray vaughan brought it right back home for the 80's...to me he stands out so much from any body else in the 80's that the other great bands of the decade don't come any where near him...he stood 12 feet tall he did..
Foreigner,Styx,John Cougar,J. Geils Band,Men At Work,Duran Duran,Cyndi Lauper ,The Romantics ,The Eurythmics,Dire Straits,Billy Idol ,Reo Speedwagon , Rush
Well, The Cult have got to be my favourite band of the eighties - 'Love', 'Electric' and 'Sonic Temple' were all awesome (I haven't heard 'Dreamtime' though.) The Smiths were just behind, and then there's Metallica, Pink Floyd ('The Final Cut' was brilliant, but 'A Momentary Lapse Of Reason' was a bit pedestrian) and the rest, for the most part, sucked.
Pseudo Echo, Queen, Def Leppard they have my vote [= and i am aware some originated in the 70's maybe all i think
Hands down, the Smiths. They were the best of the 80s--or perhaps they held up the best. Anyway, I love them. Elvis Costello, though his 70s stuff is some of his strongest, also has to be acknowledged. Other good bands of the eighties: Joy Division, New Order (though the former was probably better), Siouxsie and the Banshees (70s/80s), Cocteau Twins, Echo and the Bunnymen...Paul Simon's "Graceland" ?
