i dont see why someone would need to know who the beatles are to believe in peace, love, oneness, and understand affects of our souls. isnt the whole understanding: a likewise understanding?
Knowing the past is a great thing, living in the past is generally not. If you call yourself a hippie of course it would be wise to know a bit of the origins. If you're into peace, love and understanding you can also do that without the Beatles and a label from a movement that had it's heyday 40 years ago.

hahaha brilliant i nearly filled that in imaginary! yes to everything but beatles not my fav, i do love a good sing along tho when they are playing does that count?
i, personally, love that the whole hippie chic/fashion/style thing has completely and utterly penetrated the dominant culture. We, literally, are, everywhere. What happened? Where did the revolution go? It didn't go anywhere. It is ongoing. Change of the level we are striving for is a long term process and it will take generations. We can get there. Peace & Love, Spicey Cat Brrrrp!
It was always about the spirit of it. Those that can grasp the high of self empowerment, of being able to dream and to take steps down that less traveled path I can certainly forgive for not knowing that there was Jefferson Airplane before the Starship.
being a hippie is a lifestyle. it has absolutely nothing to do with what you wear or what music you listen to, or any of that.
can i just point out the obvious? maybe someone else has already said this, i dont wanna read through 10 pages to find out...but these girls probably weren't trying to be hippy at all. They're just like any other typical high school girls. They wear what is fashionable. In 1989 it was duckhead shorts and polo shorts. in 1999 it was wide legged jeans (remember jncos?!?!) and those hideous graphic shirts with smiley faces or some stupid phrase on them. and in 2009 it was long flowing shirts and gypsy skirts. It has nothing to do with hippie ideals and everything to do with what was on the runway at new york fashion week that year.
Who has the "authority" to call anyone a "fake hippy"? I know of a few people that act like hippies, but they don't go around telling people they're hippies. Who knows? Who cares? Who cares who knows?
It's such a shame most people can't look at another person's outfit without projecting the closest associated label(s) on them (and the matching stereotypes and cliché's with it). I guess we should be glad it's generally all just a subconscious process.
