    are you calling me judgemental?

    I actually want to be hula girl but I constantly get bickered at saying how its only for "attention". I am interested in the amazing health effects it has as well as taking it to the next level with fire. My longest record of holding a hula hoop up without dropping it is 50 minutes. I would love someone to show me to do this, and not judge me. If that's okay with society I mean.

    But that isn't what your post said.
    You asked if "guys" thought hooping was sexy or slutty.

    Slutty is a judgmental, shaming word used against women.
    Be better than that.

    And it can be sexy, but it's empowering, graceful, flowing, absorbing, amazing, wild and free, too.

    Thing is, someone is always in their Judgy Mc Judgerpants. Discernment is pretty important.
    Sure we get on rolls of unimportant in the long run stuff, but even that requires discernment, and desicion making based on that judgement call.


    The change can come when we err on the side of positive judgement calls.

    The OP, no longer active here, submerged herself in Beatle music (hey I did it too, in the 70s), likely got all high and happy on positivity, found this site and just jumped in.

    And it's a very common topic. The mod team combines threads constantly.

    Do I think the posting is silly? Yeah, but I was raised on the fringes of the subculture, half in, half out and pretty aware of the silly lines, in both cultures.
    I had an understanding of when it was teasing, and when it was malice.

    I've since been the target of many levels within the teasing/malice divide. Had a few nights where I wondered if we'd get out of town in time!

    But mostly it's the same duff that hipsters take now. Played up stereotyping.

    Are modern hippies fake? No more and no less than back in the day before the press have us that tag...which spawned from our own use of "hip" and "hipster" as the Beats used it.
    So some are, some aren't, many are just trying ideas on for size.
    It's how we grow as individuals and societies.
    Hoping we will grow positively.

    As for turning some of the old and not working parts of the dominant culture on its ear, I say more power to ya, if you have some viable options.
    Nature abhors a vacuum, and control loves to fill one.

    You need to take words you see less seriously. I didn't mean "guys" as ALL MEN. Have you ever once heard someone come in a group of people and say "Hey you guys !!:) " and they both included MALE and FEMALE? I'm sure you have. :)

    I am a feminist. I am for all equality. Justifying that, i'm just gonna go ahead and say that "guys" can interpreted by both sexes. I firmly believe males and females should be treated the same and given the same rights. I know hula is sexy, empowering, graceful. That's why I am interested in learning further into it. I am a wild and free girl, for you don't know me at all.

    The area at this time that I am living in unfortunately belittles women (is that better than using the word slut?) who hula. I was merely interested in what other people had to say about the modern day hula girls at festivals.

    or, you could take things less personally and feel you have to be defensive. Slut isa judgmental word, that, as you say, belittles women.

    That is far more accurate, as you asked us if we thought hula hooping was slutty or sexy.
    It isn't slutty and it is so very much more than merely sexy.
    It isn't sexual at all, most of the time.

    Yeah, it has always varied from one individual to another, and it always will. Everybody has their own reasons and motivations for doing things. Judging by the group never ends well.

    On the streets of Asheville today, you can easily meet two people in two minutes who both look like hippies and call themselves by that label, but completely disagree about some very important things, even as fundamental has having respect for those with other opinions and points of view. Some are very kind and caring, while others are incredibly angry and bitter. A third group seems to only care about the superficial aspects of the label.

    Which of the three groups is "real"? I think everybody knows what my answer is, but not everybody agrees with it.

    I'd like for someone to please identify WHO THE HELL has the "authority" to decide who is a "fake" hippy, and explain to myself and others WHERE THE HELL they got that fake authority.

    NO ONE has the authority OR business to tell me or you or anyone else IF they are a hippy or not. If I wanna be a hippy, I will be. If you wanna be a hippy, be one. Hell if I wanna be Superman, gimme my "S" and I'll be Superman.

    I don't like labels, but one thing I don't like even more than labels is some asswipe that thinks they can tell me or others what we are or what we want.

    There are some on the political section that pretend to be hippies. Their names insinuate that they are, but their posts are anything but. The true hippie is a natural "liberal". The movement was all about being "liberated". It really bugs me that these deceivers are trying to promote a "narrow minded" hateful ideology to this forum, which I thought was a forum to promote awareness of a more enlightened thought.

    Hippiedom started out as "peace, love and brotherhood", but has been taken over by "sex, drugs and rock & roll". Not that I'm against the latter, it's just that the more enlightened meaning seems to have been lost.
