Groovecookie- "A thousand might be overkill, but I think it's good if people discuss what the word "hippie" means. I mean, at some point I think we should decide if it HAS any meaning besides just an outdated stereotype"----I agree-good post! as most of the questions in this forum have to do with what it was like back then and how we lived'it only makes sense for people to want to find out as much as possible about the people called "hippys".- I tried to ask but had my thread shut down lol-The only reason a thread should be closed is if it is offensive or flaming-if the question is boring to some' and it might be' it still is a legitimate question and I for one would love to hear what the young people today think the hippys were and were not. Also' can a hippy be a republican? or work for company that builds bombs? Whats the rules for being a hippy? In the 60s many long haired guys like me and my friends held down jobs but also protested the war and partied on the day off-we didn;t sleep on the streets-the hippys that the magazines showed the world were really dirty' stoned' people sleeping on Haight street. So' to many people the word hippy was not a good person but a bum. Thanks to the media at the time. The majority of freedom loving people in the 60s worked and had a place to sleep at night. Some of the most loving peaceful people I have met in my life have not had long hair or beads-good people are good people and there is no label or word to desribe them-just nice people going about life helping others when possible.
hippie was never a compliment. it was the "working" or "upper class" called the people that they just didnt like. most of them were the ones that were all about free love because they were a threat to the stuctured world others were use to at the time. they were more of a break threw generation. thats what i hear my dad saying. i wear my moms old clothes and go thrist shopping so my appearence is "hippie" like. but i have two jobs and go to school full time. and still manage to dose out once a month and get old friends together and have circles with my huka. truely if you want to call yourself something then fine. personally though when i get called a "hippie" ijust say im not a hippie. im ashley fucking stafford. flash the peace fingers and mosey on out.
lol-thats good-and your right-we were the considered to be lowlifes in alot of places. Not in San Francisco or New York but most of this country hated the hippys-We were just long haired freaks gettin high and makin love-they tagged us and branded us and next thing ya know were "hippys"-we never called each other that though-brother and sister but not hippy-
yea i know i might only be 19 startign today but all the festivals i go to and the old heads i converse with have never called me a hippy, they always call me sister and my dad knows because he was there. i just let people talk say what they want it doesn affect me or who i am. lol
Your dads right-we got called all kinds of stuff-hippy was the one that stuck-we were mods or rockers -beatniks-'longhairs'and on and on-Those stupid names meant nothing to us-just be you
have you heard that song it goes something like: long hair freaky people need not apply can't you read the sign? saw a sign that said to trespassing or yuo will be shot on sight so i hopped the fence and yelled what gives you the right?! i dont know the whole song but it pretty much repeats "sign sign everywhere a sign:ll
Through the wonders of the intrawebz, I have discovered that this song is called "Signs" by Five Man Electric Band. I just listened to it, and it's most excellent.
Rick-thats right--I forgot about the "head" name we had. There was a bunch of different titles comin along all the time. Always wondered why they didn't do a sequel to Easy Rider-They made that flick for less then a million bucks and it made about 50 million-did you catch Peter Fonda in Ghost Rider?-He played the devil.--ASTAFF-That song played every ten minutes when it came out-great tune-the stations played that one and American Pie alot!--
I remember a movie Fonda did with Nancy Sinatra once. But the flick you mentioned Ghost? No doesn't ring a bell. But Dennis Hopper became my favourite and when he did Apocolypes Now he was Dennis Hopper the hippy again. The only other actor today I like is Johnny Depp wasn't Fear and loathing Great?Ed Wood the guy can act.Actresses not too many just some chicks over here are any good but you never heard of them so take my word.
Ghost Rider came out on DVD about 3 months ago-It stars Nickolas Cage as a stunt rider who does a deal with the devil-(Fonda)-decent movie-made from the Marvel comic-Depp was good as Hunter Thompson for sure!-O Hunter checked out early and on purpose-too bad-I used to live about 50 miles from here in Salem Oregon-I lived down the street from the mental hospital that was used to film One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest-great movie!-How did you end up in China?-Make a wrong turn? lol
Its a long story, I teach music, the other day I whipped out a Theramin and the crowd went nuts they never saw or heard one before I thought they would run when they listened to it but not so, China is happenin' dood.
Great-sounds like your diggin the people and the place-thats what matters-I too have traveled the world but never been there-I did eat alot of cheap dinners in Chinatown in San Francisco-not the same though-lol
Real hippys are willing to listen and learn-fake hippys close down thoughts and threads-it's called fear!
Dude, chillax! Seriously, brother. They didn't close down your thread because they hate free speech. They closed it because it was another one of those threads along the lines of "My Friends Say I'm A Fake Hippie, Are They Right?" or "What Is A Hippy? Is It A Stereotype Invented By The Media? Or Is It A Valid Name To Describe Ourselves And Our Identity As A Whole?" No one here has a problem with anyone speaking hir mind, we just have a problem people get incredibly repetitive by asking the same five questions over and over and over and over again. It's not called fear, it's called frustration.
Im not a hippie, In fact Its a label, thats what i think a so called "hippie" is supposed to be against, Labels suck.....so Yes Im not a hippie, Im derek Nice to meet you
Nodirect-my question had nothing to do with fake vs. real or how to become a hippy-I was one of the original hippys and just wondered what the young people today consider a hippy today and yesterday-in other words-to see your views on what you were taught to believe a hippy was and what you think it is-the perception is always different then the reality-and in the case of the hippy-the media made it what it was-they created the word but who were the people behind those words?-and who are they now?
A hippie is s/he as you are s/he as you are me and we are all together. But... if you still want to know the answer to that specific question, you could look through one of the "What is a hippie" threads and check the ages of the posters. It's time consuming, but... at least you can get your answer if you really want it. :/
I sincerly believe you guys are re-incarnated freaks come back because the world needs the karma right now.So get out there and do your thing.
