I used to be extremely addicted to Facebook. I still check it out couple times a day and post something hilarious or a good song. I just kinda lost interest though. I probably wouldn't get on at all if it wasn't the main way we correspond for roller derby.

    Hello,

I use the Facebook in order to masturbate to pictures of bikini clad friends and their pets.

    Otherwise, it's a little dull.

I think if many people actually understood what Wastebook actually does, they'd never dream of signing up.

    Horrible idea.

Linkedin etc is equally as hideous btw

And Twitter people just make me laugh a lot of the time.

There might be uses for these grotesque creations, but I wouldn't exactly want slimeballs like Zuckerberg having a big file on me.

I masturbate on their babies, not to their babies.

I don't like babies, I prefer them unborn.. leaves a little to the imagination, you know?

    :sunny:

I share the weight between the two.. I prefer Hip cos there's a lot more of my kinda humour.. raw and generally not all that funny, and more legitimate talk about drugs and philosophy. I occasionally browse the sex forums for a laugh, but fuck that place is just way too weird for a daily dosage.

BUT I've never found someones head being cut off on Hip, so some points need to be distributed to FB. And the fact that I keep in touch with all my old mates from the UK via FB.

Either way, I devote way too much time to them both.. but fuck it, that'll hopefully change when I can finally drive and get the fuck out the house :D

Does anyone know if that prick Zuckerberg has his entire friend list and messaging history online at Wastebook/Linkedin etc?

    I suspect not... :-/

Yahoo even scans your emails for "keywords" it says.

Time for Torbrowser etc.. me thinks.

well if you're into that sorta shit you could just browse gore forums. Trust me that decapitation was not that hxxcore compared to half the shit on gore forums.

Shit like luca magnotta gets leaked on gore forums.

But i cant go on them because i end up staring for hoours and feeling fucked after. Definitely very unhealthy

You know what really creeps me out though? After you posted that decapitation, I watched it on facebook and then went on some gore websites (in a different browser and not, from facebook) and now my facbook is full of sponsored adds for gore pages....

Hmm.. I kinda think it's a good thing. It is disturbing, but people are way too sheltered and are completely oblivious to real dirty funk like that.

    Hedge:

Nah, I'm not really into that gorey shit. As I said above though, I think it's healthy every now and then.. broadening perspective and what not.

And yeah... FB sucks for that ad , invasive motherfuckers.. but I don't really mind. I used to get stoned and click "Remove add -> because it's offensive". Somehow seemed like I was getting my own back on Suckerberg.. but he always has reinforcements :(

Being that social networking is still a new, and massively involving phenomenon, the lackluster dissenter in me has resigned to the motto "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em." But this is only on the self-conscious surface, while I've since recognized that it's hypostasis is far more disturbed, as always.. Facebook in particular appears to me to be something that you do not necessarily chose to join nor refrain from, although most people assume as much, and at first glance it certainly appears so. It is in actuality exclusive and frustrates more than it satisfies, and I get the peculiar feeling that somehow, it is not meant for everybody, and of it's own volition it siphons the population by it's own interactivity.

I doubt this makes much sense, so I will say it more simply: a social phenomenon of this profound magnitude is not to be trifled with, and to conclude it to be benign and it's effects as insignificant or simply personal would be very foolish. I don't mean to suggest it to be a portent, but I wouldn't ignore that possibility either. I most definitely do not concern myself with the humans who gain from it's being firmly embedded, as I apprehend something more vague at work, beyond the immediate reach of cognition.

Being curious, I signed up anonymously once and used it for a month. I was alarmed the way privacy was handled. If you wanted to send a "hug", you had to use some kind of app that asked before it sent the hug, "do you mind if the Hug app has access to your personal profile?" I answered Yes I mind. Wtf does it need that access? I closed my account, not tempted to go back.

    why not?

facebook spams us, so why shouldn't we spam facebook?

    very verbose of you.

So basically, you think its an important social phenomenon and it might be bad, but you don't want to comment further...?

It wouldn't crop up on a 'sponsored link' or anything - it'll just be basically people posting it in groups etc. I just think it's not something Facebook should be associated with. There are other sites where this stuff has been for, well, ever since you could post videos on the Internet - let it remain there.

You should *poke* rather than *hug*
The apps you are talking about are just designed to get access to your details to send you crap.
Facebook still has *poke* - it used to have *hug* etc. *poke* doesn't ask for any of your details.
I don't mind sharing data for certain legitimate groups/sites/apps...
    But *hugs*, erm, no...
To be fair, most of them just want access to your wall - they don't use any other details.
Pretty knee jerk reason to leave.

Well, that wasn't the only reason. Basically I value my privacy. Reading interviews of Zuckerberg, it's clear he doesn't. They make more money the more they can make people blab on about what they "like". I hate ads, even if they are "targeted". I also have a higher standard for the concept of "friend" than they do.

The people I know that feel like that don't give anything away - it's just a way to connect with People.
They, like you, register anon' - obviously telling friends who they are etc...
They don't force you to be friends with anybody you don't want to be...
Don't join again - it seems you would have a terrible time there...
You've been spooked by the media...

Odon: It's not really appropriate for anywhere really, it's someones head getting cut off :p it's not great, but I still think it's better to have it there than not.

I kinda agree with Magic, I think.. nobody, not even Zuckerberg, really knows how big FB is. We're still riding the wave, and it is a fuckin' big one.. not even sure if it's broken yet, or if it's still building.
There's already been a lot of shit with people being careless about what they post, which has subsequently ruined their careers and made pretty big dents in peoples lives. Although it's not marketed to be private, people do assume it.. understandably. There could be some really ouchy moments to come.
