California used "less than1%" gas in 2007,as they did in 2000, even tho prices nearly doubled.

I'm not even close to being an economist,but doesn't profit mean what's left after all other payments-ie:cost of doing business,taxes,ect?If so doesn't that mean that exxon made the 40 billion profit as stated?If not,why is this figure called the largest profit in history?Is it profit or not?

 

That is true, they did make more money than any company in history. They also spent more money than any company in history to make it.

I never said they didnt make billions, i simply said they are not the reason gas is so high as some would love to believe. That is simply it. I am not a fan of Haliburton or any illegal business practices or coporate welfare, i think it was off on a tanget.

That is the sole reason i posted, i am not defending them, they made 40 billion dollars in profit and paid roughly 30 billion in taxes. Other companies reguraly make 10% if not more profit margin, heck, Microsoft made 30%. They are a private business that is in the market to make money, i see nothing wrong with making a profit. If they were making 30% profit margin and were responsible for rising prices, i would feel differently. They are not, they are in a capitalist economy doing what every other business does. As for Govt help, i am against it 100%, but if the money is there and offered, they will take it just like any other business would.

As for response, i am at work, i check the forum from time to time, i cant watch the thread 24/7.

The question i have posed that you all have dodged in blaming Exxon and every other oil company is if gas is so high and Exxon makes 10% profit, where does the rest go?
