I have to admit, a lot of people made some great points about the good in compulsory education. It teaches the basic skills, helps social skills, etc. but still... does it have to be run by the government? Is there any other way?
Of course there is another way. There are many other ways, people just need to find them. What makes people think if something isn't "of the government" then it must be somehow wrong? Why are people so lazy or apathetic that they just let the government do it? People could take back just about any facet of their lives if they just WOULD. Cosmic- Someplace in your posts, which I read yesterday, there was something which made me think of a legend from my hometown in Randolph, NY. There was a guy (don't have his name handy)who built a "God machine" (or perpetual motion machine depending on who you talk to) in Boston and shipped it to that area of NY because he felt that there was some sort of vortex of electromagnetic and spiritual energy there which would help to animate his machine. He brought it to one of the popular spiritualist centers in that part of the state. At some point he felt the need to hide the machine. That's when he took it to Randolph, which is a really small and out of the way town. It was hidden in a farmers barn, and according to the legend as told by ancestors of the locals there at the time, an angry and scared mob went to the barn, smashed the machine and burned the barn down....
We forgo the esoteric in favor of the superficial because we're programmed to think that way. It's safer, and it keeps us in line. Some folks might see cosmicdust's ideas as far fetched, but it's clear there's a foundation of conventional science backing up the metaphysics, and everyone I know who's been to Roswell New Mexico swears there's an alien presence there, so why not entertain those ideas? Because we're programmed not to, that's why. We reject that which we don't understand, because we're rigid and ignorant. When I look at the absurd state of disrepair of our nation and our constitution, I can't help but conclude that something's going on that's beyond our control. A secret society would explain it. We're lead to believe our political leaders and the decisions they make are driven by a democratic process, but their actions sure don't reflect that. And what better way to control the masses than to instill fear in schools? Fear has been proven time and time again to be an effective tool for mind control.
Good question. I don't think there's an answer, if you lend yourself to the idea that an education is necessary for a child's development. If so, you need some standard with which to measure the quality of the schools, and government oversight of the public schools to be sure they comply with the standard. I have friends who spend thousands of dollars to send their kids to private school, where they tailor the lesson plans to suit the kids' specific needs. Not everyone is willing and able to do that for their kids. Not us anyway. Our approach is different. We let the schools do their thing with our kids, then we encourage our kids to question what they've learned, and think for themselves, instead of going along with the pack. As you can imagine, our kids are more challenging than most, but they're worth it.
There is no perfect answer, one way or another. However, this does not mean that there are not alternative answers. First we must try thinking outside the box, which is the type of thinking that is not taught in schools. We are taught a certain way of thinking is correct, that history is objective, that there are no alternatives when it comes to different debates. This can be traced back thousands of years, not just to the education system now. If someone disagreed w/ Church doctrine, their views were deemed heretical and this has been going on for thousands of years. Western society has had this indoctrinated and the education system is only reflecting this fact. Perhaps the real challenge is to change our thoughts, to change that internal process before the change outside of ourselves can exist. What if this can be reflected in the stages of moral development? Many people are stuck at the fourth level, Authority and social-order maintaining orientation and until these people or society in general advances to the sixth level, Universal ethical principles, we will always need law and order. Perhaps we can apply this to the education system, until we reach higher levels of development, social order will demand the type of education system we have today. Just something to think about. The only way to embrace the chaos of nature is to go with the flow, not try to fight it or control it, or rely on someone else (like the government) to control it--that only results in dependency. I remember when I got out of the military 20+ years ago, I had a hard time accepting the concept of making my own decisions, it was so much easier having those decisions made for me. Schools do that to kids too if you let them. The key is to encourage independence, and teach them to reject those ideas, while remaining tactful so they avoid trouble in the world they're forced to live in (which is a useful skill unto itself). Intellectual freedom and respect of others' intellectual freedom goes a long way toward collective consciousness. The empire is crumbling, as empires always do, because civilization cannot exist on a faulty moral foundation, and empires are faulty by design, because they're based on class disparity and social inequality. Interesting, maybe we'll see this in 2012? I read something recently about a study in moral development. The conclusion was that genetics play a larger roll in one's moral development than environmental factors, though environmental factors have a bearing on one's actions. Those whos actions defy their moral compass are forced to rationalize. I learned everything I know in kindergarten.
I'm a sophomore in high school and I think that we should be able to learn what we want to learn. We're give 4 core classes and a couple of useless electives thrown in there. Since kindergarden my teachers have been telling me to be myself, to be different. Everyone is born differently so we shouldn't all act the same. But they teach us the exact same things and tell us what we should grow up to be. A doctor. A lawyer. A teacher. It never fails. They tell us to be ourselves and to express our individuality. But our individuality isn't good enough unless it meets their standards. They stick us in uniforms. Tell us if we can or cant wear make up...what we can and can't wear. How are we suppose to express ourselves when we aren't allowed to make any of our own choices? If school let us decide on a few things, I think, that a lot more kids would be interested in going and apply themselves if they are actually interested in what we are learning.
Nice post "angel love"!!! Your post was VERY TRUE and observant, in analyzing the situation of our current EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM, in our current REALITY! I'm very IMPRESSED!!! It's always a good idea in the Public Educational System to have a grouping of CORE (or essential) classes like: mathematics, sciences, language (hopefully ENGLISH?), history, literature, philosophy and some arts, as these are essential for one's SURVIVAL in this world! Hopefully TRUTHFUL? Some ELECTIVE courses are offered, but not many, and usually "electives" that many students may not be interested in. I agree that many Public School Systems should offer many more elective courses, and courses that students are ACTUALLY INTERESTED in!!! Why doesn't this happen? Mostly because of ECONOMIC reasons, as many school systems are extremely limited to a STRICT BUDGET! Also, partially due to not educating the people to be SMARTER than their RULING ELITE, as that could possibly interfere with their POWER and CONTROL "game". But mostly, BUDGET concerns are what LIMIT the amount of elective courses in a given school system. Ideally, we should have a Public Educational School System that allows students FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION in learning, so that they can pursue knowledge and wisdom that they ACTUALLY WANT and DESIRE to learn!!! It is VERY TRUE that students learn much better if they can learn what they're interested in, or what NATIVE AMERICAN'S would call: "PURSUING YOUR PASSIONS", as they exhibit much more FOCUS and INTENT on what they are pursuing!!! Instead, what do we get in our current Public Educational System? We get lies, limitations and basic SUPPRESSION of EDUCATIONAL FREEDOMS, by not allowing the students to THINK FOR THEMSELVES, exhibit SELF EXPRESSION or allow them to FOLLOW THEIR PASSIONS in learning!!! Sometimes we even get "TAZERED"!!! Of course, the COMMUNIST EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM (like in: RUSSIA, CHINA and CUBA) is even more restrictive and controlling than our own EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM!!! In communist educational systems, all good communist students dress in a "state" uniform and are told to just "SHUT UP and LEARN" (propaganda?), as they are just considered "PROPERTY of the STATE". Are teachers telling you the TRUTH, when they say that you can express your INDIVIDUALITY, but then don't "practice what they preach" or "WALK their TALK"? Of course, you can't tell teachers that they're LYING to you, because it would get you involved in a lot of unnecessary TROUBLE!!! Just keep a LOW PROFILE and don't be that SQUEEKY WHEEL (i.e. constant complainer) that gets the GREASE (or unwanted focus and attention, that could justify some form of DISCIPLINARY ACTION (or PUNISHMENT)!!! Learn what you want to on YOUR OWN, i.e. after school, but after school you may just want to HAVE FUN with family and friends, and just RELAX and ENJOY LIFE!!! This is a very GOOD thing to do!!! Students usually learn best, when they are HAPPY, CONTENT and filled with JOY!!! There is a governement (agenda-based) program called: GLOBAL EDUCATION 2000, which trys to prevent students to THINK FOR THEMSELVES and ANALYZE DATA to form their own INDIVIDUAL conclusions, or to think CRITICALLY!!! It is just based upon the old "game" of POWER and CONTROL!!! We can't have the PEOPLE (slaves?) MORE SMARTER than US (i.e. the RULING ELITE), can we? Why they'd take OUR POWER and CONTROL away from us? They'd become the ALPHA MALE (or ALPHA FEMALE? - "GIRL POWER")!!! But then isn't it just us (i.e. GROUP CONSCIOUSNESS, or SOCIETY) that "gives our power away" to them!!! Shouldn't we save our own power to EMPOWER ourselves??? "POWER to the PEOPLE" was an old !960's slogan!!! DUMB SLAVES make for EASY RULING!!! The lesson here: LEARN ALL that you can, by YOURSELF!!! Find out your own TRUTHS, so that SMARTER people can't con, scam and take advantage of you, like we see on many Main Stream Media (MSM) television news stories!!! Being "STREET SMART" is VERY IMPORTANT too!!! Plus, with PROPER KNOWLEDGE, it can help you to SURVIVE better in the ENVIRONMENT!!! As you grow older (like me), you'll come to the REALIZATION that our world is based upon mountains of "dark lies" and "white lies"!!! "PhD" really just means "Piled Higher and Deeper"!!! A MS College Degree is "More of the Same". A BS Degree is self-explanatory!!! There is too much "HIDDEN KNOWLEDGE", in the form of: SECRET SOCIETIES, INTELLIGENCE AGENCIES (i.e. in the "interest" of NATIONAL SECURITY) and RELIGIOUS ORDERS, which then just generates "cover ups" and "conspiracies", which just causes SEPERATION (the old POLARITY GAME) from UNITY and ONENESS of GROUP CONSCIOUSNESS (i.e. SOCIETY) and is just really power and control of the RULING ELITE, through "DIVIDE and CONQUER", and "ORDER through CHAOS". It's truley amazing to me, how our world can still function based upon so many LIES!!! BILL CLINTON didn't have "sexual relations with that woman" (i.e. MONICA LEWINSKI), did he??? Some spiritual masters, and quantum physicists tell us that our perceptions of our universe is BACKWARDS (in REVERSE) and/or "UPSIDE-DOWN"! When light enters our eyeball, the eye's LENS turns the image "up-side down", before it comes in contact with the RETINA? Does our brain reverse this image to "right-side up" when it "processes" the resulting electrical nerve impulses! Tha'ts a good philosophical question to ponder??? Human beings' DNA-structural "variations in CODING", make us unique, and INDIVIDUAL. Some medications effect people differently, due to these DNA differences in each human being and makes medicine more difficult to practice, in this aspect, so the same principle also applies to human beings' learning abilities, and a PROPER EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM should adapt to this principle, but it doesn't very well!! If you do learn things for yourself (especially from the INTERNET), there is a lot of MIS-INFORMATION and DIS-INFORMATION (especially with Main Stream Media (MSM). MIS-INFORMATION is information that is FALSE, because some scientific conclusions and/or directions were WRONG (but NOT KNOWN, as we human beings learn a lot from TRIAL and ERROR), which really means an UKNOWN MISTAKE was just made. DIS-INFORMATION is information that takes known (and TRUE) information, but REPLACES it with FALSE, or MIS-DIRECTED information (i.e. the "DIS-INFORMATION") to CONFUSE you, and, hopefully, makes you give-up your search for the truth, so you don't learn the truth!!! Many times there are numberous "different versions" of DIS-INFORMATION (placed along side the TRUE INFORMATION), so you have too many versions of "The TRUTH" to choose from!!! This is FUTURE SHOCK (or computer-brain OVERLOAD of information), obviously resulting in CONFUSION!!! This information is usually involved with "hidden", "forbidden", "secret", "classified" and "cover-up" information, that governments don't want their people to know. You must: "seperate the WHEAT (i.e. TRUTHS) from the CHAFF (i.e. FALSE and USELESS information)". As a word of WARNING, you usually CAN'T, or SHOULDN'T mention, or discuss, hidden, forbidden, secret, classified or "cover-up" (i.e. "conspiracy") information in the Public Education School System even if it is found to be actually TRUE!!! You sort of have to KEEP SILENT about it (for your OWN PROTECTION and WELL-BEING)!!! For example, FREE ENERGY GENERATORS are very real, and DO WORK, but they would allow individual human beings to have their own FREE POWER SOURCE, and not be DEPENDENT on the POWER and OIL COMPANIES for their ELECTRICAL POWER, which is what the RULING ELITE want, i.e. they just play the old POWER and CONTROL "game". many good points but i believe that if education wasn't compulsory wouldn't bother, many people don't even though it is compulsory. also, try telling those without state education systems how bad it all is
Unfortunately, yes, some wouldn't even bother. but wouldn't jobs still require some kind of "education" or knowledge? I think in the end people would slowly figure it out on their own that they should still educate themselves... hopefully.
High school in America is a joke. They shove you stuff, that for the most part, you'll never use the rest of your life. In many ways, high school is indeed, similar to a prison. No wonder there is a lot school violence, because the school system produces stupid people who lack critical thinking skills, not to mention the stupid teachers hired to do the "teaching".
If everyone were left to their own devices, they would soon discover that NOT learning to read and write is a huge handicap! One can barely live in this world without knowing these things! But once a person knows how to read and write (express themselves) and simple math, they can go on into anything they like ON THEIR OWN. If they don't, then they will most likely not make it very well in this world. Well, many people don't anyhow. So what's the difference? People taught to THINK for themselves have a much greater chance of making something of their lives. People who would CHOOSE not to learn reading and writing? Fools. It would be like moving to Russia and refusing to learn the language. Personal responsibility is where it's at. THAT is what people really need to learn, everything else follows.
We need to raise intelligent, enlightened students with sharpened critical thinking skills when they come out of high school, not dumb idiots only fit as cannon fodder for the military.
Education doesn't have to come from the government... it can come from US. We can decide the teachers, the classroom, the subject.... we can get REAL teachers, like people who've actually been there rather than arrogant college grads who think a degree makes them know everything. I've met plenty of people in their 50's who know waay more and have a lot more to teach and a lot more patience and understanding than most teachers these days.
A better way than GOVERNMENT SANCTIONED public education. Education is education. Would that everyone had their acts so together that they didn't need ANY education at all...:H
