The only animals I actually "own" are some of the fish in my small tank. The big tank, all the big fish, the bearded dragon, and the cat all came from deadbeat owners... The cat's owner was a neighbor who got evicted, and the rest were friends who I told I would take care of them for a little while but I enjoy all the 'kids' and caring for them too, so it's all good. It's a bitch to clean all their stuff though, especially water changes in the big fish tank. edit: never before in my life have I contemplated breeding roaches, but with the dragon it might be a good thing to do...
My dad has a billion gallon salt water aquarium, (well 180 gallons I think) and Im forever against them now due to him leaving the hose to fill it up on all night and leaving the floor completely flooded. (this happened three times, you'd think he'd learn) then he got a new tank and the old one was supposed to be for my tank for some sort of lovely creature but I moved here, and he traded it for scuba lessons or some weird shit.
I'm sorry to say that your father sounds like a pretty dim bulb. Fish tanks are pretty cool, at least with freshwater you just have to spend a decent chunk of time one day every week or two maintaining them. I don't have any experience with saltwater tanks. 180 gallons sounds right big though.
Saltwater is a huge pain in the ass. His tank is giant, and fish and random inhabitants are really expensive. Even the rocks are expensive. He used to buy live rocks on eBay all the time and spend hours organizing them in the tank. Lol... They are neat to watch though. He was never big on fish, he usually only had one fish in at a time. Then there were anemonies and star fish and crabs and snails and feather dusters and worms and random sea things that live on the rocks, those are all the cool things. But once something goes wrong, it goes wrongggg and the whole tank suffers. He can't be bothered to take care of it anymore so everything died basically. Lol. There's a brief history of my dad's tanks for ya
This happens far too often with animals it's pretty sad. My housemate found a fish tank and was really bad about taking my advice. I guess he just wanted to do it his way, and his way involved treating his fish tank like a painting and not an environment for an animal(s) to live in. All his fish got ick and died except one and then the tank sprung a leak because he wedged a piece of wood across the short side and then slowly swelled up, pushed the front and back of the tank away from each other, and the seal broke. I woke up one morning, went to the bathroom, and then heard the sound of a filter running dry coming from the living room, I go in there and the floor is a fucking pond. Mine you we were on the second floor so I was kinda worried... no reports of drippidge from the neighbors though Now I have this random African butterfly fish that really sticks out be cause it looks all weird... i.e. : (not my actual fish)
That Dragon Is Beautiful.... Do You Let Him Run Around The House, Sit On The Sofa, And Watch T.V With You.....? Cheers Glen.
We had a puffer fish die of ick or ich or whatever it is his name was Kermit it's good the water didn't seep down through the floor/ceiling. We just ruined our carpet and warped the wood floors. A lot.... When I had my turtle I was always frightened the tank would tip over and Id have 60 gallons of water on my floor. Yikes. That fishy looks like his guts are falling out (in a good way ) it's a compliment I promise.
@Glen: Not yet, I'm still getting used to handling him. I used to have serious problems with touching reptiles and fish and stuff, but I've gotten over it, it's still a little strange for me though. Also, I think that Lord Bubbles might have something to say about all that... :biggrinjester:
HA! That picture is priceless. Looks like he found the stash and decided to indulge and now he's got that "I think I did too much" face.
Ya, there were two puffers in the tank, which I thought actually need a brackish setup, but are sold as freshwater anyways... Methinks it wasn't leaking for too long, because it was still draining out when I woke up, we probably had about 15 gallons on the floor and leak was probably going for less than an hour Those fins are interesting, they change colors. Sometimes the red is really bright. I really know nothing about that type of fish though... I should do some research. Also: Iguanas get big... and old. That's a serious pet.
Awww the bearded dragon is cute! I loooove reptiles! My bearded dragon is old fat and lazy. He only eats worms and raisins which I find endearing about him. He's rather finicky. I want a gecko and tomato frog.
ok so I'm new in the forum, just found this thread and I loved it so I thought on posting my little baby, her name is Matilda and doesn´t have any dreads but I still love her . She just turned 7 months.
My room mate runs a Cat rescue but every so often she will bring in puppies. So we now have four foster puppies, They are pits but I think they have something mixed in them. They are the sweetest things. So we now have four puppies and 2 dogs in the house. Good thing we have a big back yard. So thought I would share some photos of them. [/IMG] [/IMG] [/IMG] [/IMG]
Had a fun time letting the Splizzard roam the pad. Here's basking time on the 'living room' floor: (thumbnails are click-able )
Mum came home with a dog yesterday that she found escaped in the rain. Came with complimentary dreadlocks
