Lux...if you raise him vegan...stay clear of hemp milk and excessive soy milk. Soy is not good for little boys because it has strands of estrogen based soemthing or other in it....I forget what it is exactly...but a friend of mine was feeding her baby boy soy milk thinking the fats and protein were good for his growing mind and body and it ended up making him ill. My favorite milk is hemp milk....yummmyumm! I started giving it to Amara cuz I figured it would be good. Its loaded with omegas, iron and protein....but uh....she got pretty sick too. boo. The Dr. explained to me that childrens bodies dont digest the proteins very well in alternative milks. After theyve reached puberty then their ok to consume whatever they want protein wise. But till then stay clear of those two especially! And make sure to do your research on how much proteins, iron, calcium and nutrients he needs daily! Im sure you will....sorry its the mom in me! Rats. Ill stop lecturing now! =]

I used to be veggie for about 7 months but I was losing lots of weight and was down to 160 pounds and felt weak and scrawny. So I started eating meat again.

    Now I feel Alpha

down to 160? 160 aint too thin
if u felt weak u wernt eatting right maybe
but u were down to 160 from what?
    over 200?
maybe was good fopr ya u were getting healthier
but wernt really eatting right to keep ypur energy up

why were u concerned bout getting down to a healthier weight?
i read it as 100 at 1st then saw it was 160..at 100 yea id think u were doing something wrong.. but gertting down to 160 is certainly healthy

    btw
does the world really need more alpha dogs?
arent they always the ones causing the problems?
wheres wars come from but niot alpha dogs trying to prove they got the biggest balls iin the world
in a pack theyre always fighting for control

the alphas are always tge ones that cause peace to break out into chaos
most of the world could live together peacefully and get along if it wasnt for the power hungry alphas trying to controll everything and prove theyre head alpha

if your implying being veggie makes u weak, i guarantee you thats not true, ive been veg 23 years or so and usualy u could break 2x4's over my shoulders
not that im some jock freak, just like to spend alotta time in the mountsans and run around town alot so do alotta miles

i can also tell u u can have plenty of strength and energy eatting nothing at all for long periods, ive only done 10 and 12 day fasts, but rode a unicucly from new york to dc twice whikle fasting
    and had plenty of energy
ive known ppl to do 30 day fasts even, and still be able to handle high montain terain packing in a 60 pound pack and still run supply runs with 50-100 pound bags of veggies

my great uncle had done the longest hunger strike in irish history (luxi, u heard of terrence mcsweeny or sweeny something like that?)
    78 days (off topic sorry)

(actualy most of thst was.. just smoked lil and havent smoked in weeks)

    point is
if you were feeling weak u were probly not eatting well at all
if u lost alotta weight quickly that pretty much proves it
but if u were just losing it at a reasonable rate and getting healthier it was generaly good u just hadta start eatting lil better to compensatre

    Good link zilla :)

Does anyone have any tips for making a transition into vegetarianism, in terms of adapting cooking and shopping habits, and pitfalls of easy-to-miss nutrients?

I dont consider 160 for the way i'm proportioned to look or feel healthy. My arms and legs were turning to sticks. Right now I'm at a lean 205 with good sized arms and a v-shaped back. I'm into weightlifting and stuff so my body requires a fair amount of protein (1 g for every pound of body mass) to maintain a solid muscle size. Being vegetarian, I found it extremely hard to meet my protein needs and have the required energy to do my workouts.

veggie burgers any kind tofu or seitan. tempeh
    beans nuts grains veggies
for transitioning u may wanna just look for meatless versions of stuff your used to
tofu hotdogs veggy pastas just start leaving meat out of stuff u make alot ande subsitute a meat alternative
meat alternatives arent as nesacary as they make u think
iron might be something u wanna make sure u get enough of though, so spiniach
you can combine proteins tio make them more complete

i never rea;l;y pay aloytta attention to nutrition tho i just eat what i like or want and figure if i dont get enough of something ill just start wanting somethong thats got alot of it in it

ahh replace meatballs with falafils that sorta thing
on pizza peppers instead of peperoni

    when u go shopping tho
    read labels
make sure theres not meat or meat products in it
they chop up poor deffenceless critters and put em in most stuff so sa jar of tomato sauce that doesnt say meat flavored still might have beef/chicken stock at least
so u do gottallok at what u buy

get a few good veggie cookbooks (and a wok i love my wok) and start cooking different things

instesd of steaks grilled try portabelloes or whats that mushroom that tastes like steak?

if your not into cooking from screatch alot
theres plenty of veggie products u can buy and veggie resteraunts
but when u go to regular resteraints ya should ask to be sure stuffs veggie (and alotta chinese places concider seafood veggie so u should be specific about no seafood either (except seaweeds of course) (which migght be an aquired taste u can experiment with later, as seasonings or just munchibals)

its really not hard to do

just lil heads up tho..once you go past a certain point, usualy within 2 yewars (hmm bout the time dreads take to mature) meat will literaly become a toxifc substance to your system.. and accidently eatting it can give u a fever shaking and well feel sick as can be till u puke (or shit) it all out of your system
it can feel very very gross having that festering in your intestines unable to really be digested
even a couple accidental bites is enough to really make u feel horrible

but by 2 years your usualy pretty sure wether u wanna stay veg or not..and im sure u will

therszs a veggie forum here u can check out for info recipies and nutrition help

next time u shop, just check ingrediants for meat and cut ity all out
trying it a few weeks is easy
u may miss certasin things your so used to (or had memories attached like holiday meals)but that will fade to disgust soon enough

oh and..eventualy alotta comercials on tv will just turn your stomach

Oh I'm fine cooking from scratch, it's what I prefer to do anyway. I need to watch my carbohydrates though because I have stupid blood sugar. I'm not really sure what things I'd look at the ingredients on...I don't really buy processed foods...umm....I do have some good veggie books though. Just need to get used to approaching food supplies differently I guess... I'd like to use nuts more I think...they seem to mess with my blood sugar less than pulses.
What's goat's cheese like in the ethical ranks? And sheep cheese... goats and sheep have it a little easier than dairy cows don't they? Do they?

maybe you should ask yourself why you workout so much?
what your doing is burning burning burning ofcourse your going to have to supliment what u burn
but whatr the hell is the point in all that?
waste money at the gym so u can waste money on twice as much food as u should need so u can waste money at the gym burning it off just to have the biggest balls i mean muscles?
what do u do of any use with your massive muscles?
do you put them to good use or are they just for show?
have u got a job as a human forklift? ok in that case it makes sence
other then that yoyur simply complaining you didnt have enough protein to overwork yourself uselessly

u bought into the whhole your not a man if you dont eat your meat and look like a mysclbound freak (not to mention growling grunting alpha dog)

the media makes u think thats what your suposed to do..and u buy right into it

here's kinda what i go by ~ spend the most time in the produce and bulk sections of the market. make sure to have fruits and veggies of every color! and lots of verdant green stuff.

get wholesome grains like whole wheat pasta and quinoa and cous-cous that you can mix veggies with, like bell peppers, onions, tomatoes.... and cheese! lots of cheese, a good source of protein (as long as you're getting other essential proteins - try corn and beans or frozen edamame that you just boil, salt, and eat. corn and beans have 4 essential amino acids each and edamame have all 8! aminos are the building blocks of protein) lima beans, garbanzo beans (chickpeas)... etc

steer clear of middle aisles except for spices and soy milk and pasta and such... all that prepackaged junk drains money and nutrition.

if you need to ween yourself off of meat, ditch red meat and pork first. if you need that beefyness, get bison... or better yet fish or chicken/turkey. tofu is ok... but i like tempeh better.

What are my main options as iron sources? I'm not too worried about calcium as I probably drink about a litre of milk a day at least and don't plan to change that. It's organic usually.

I have a feeling Norway isn't ready for yeast cheese lol
Norway doesn't really do specialist items. It's all very silly. You can't even get tea tree oil here. It's too "strong"

    *sigh*

I've weaned myself off milk and most cheeses to make the transition to vegan easier. I'm going to be breastfeeding Riloh for at least a year and am doing a lot of research and am incredibly organised so will become obsessed w/ getting everything my body needs through the right foods, the right way:)
I don't use soy milk because it's genetically modified but not marked as such. Soya is transported over 5,000 miles to the UK to make feed for intensively reared livestock. Farming soya has cleared thousands of square miles of Amazon forest, and led to rural migration. My weekly/monthly food cost is a lot! I like to buy local, in season organic vegetables which are that bit more expensive. I also make everything from scratch which is more expensive but a lot more satisfying:)
