jimyjohnson, it seems you have a different experience than a lot of us here. I've tried a "dread specific" product and it was Knotty Boy and it was crap! It left my hair feeling gunky and gooey. I use baking soda and water now. It cleans my hair nicely and doesn't leave any type of residue. =)
Personally the backcombing method is working great for me and I LOVE Knotty Boy dread shampoo so apparently I am abnormal.
i've been using dr. b straight (un-diluted) for a while, should i start diluting it? is it bad that i haven't been? i usually wash it all out for at least a few minutes though cause i don't want it building up
I used to use it straight too. Never gave me any problems in the year that I used it. I did dilute it but I thought it was shit so I started using it straight. The fad died after I got sick of the nasty scuzz it left in my bath. Wasn't nice bathing in that shit and the massive clean up job after. Use Bronner's however YOU think is right for you.
I've had a lil buildup from dr B's, I stopped using it every time I shower and got some baking soda and vinegar, I didn't get more baking soda (no particular reason... I liked it... was less conveniant though) but have kept using white vinegar, no more residue problems. Though I've weaned to being able to go like a month with just vinegar until I REALLY need dr. B's. Diluted, It needs to be lathered before putting itt in your hair, by contrast to strait, when you can just dump it on and rub. I don't dilute it now since I'm using it less often, but when I did, I'd put however much in a drinking glass(stole a bunch from my college cafateria for the purpose of holding/diluting/mixing various dread cleaning solutions) with however much water, cover the top with a hand, and shake vigorously, then pour it on your hair. It workes nicely, at least for me, to use a vinegar or baking soda, followed by bronners. (dr. b's last because I'm neglecting and it increases the friction between hair, at least for me. if it's different in your hair, or you don't like that feeling, then just do vinegar or baking soda after, and you'll have very soft, nice feeling hair. )
thanks for the helpful tips everyone.. i think i'm gonna dilute it and see how i like it, but first i'm gonna try out the Deep Clean: 3/4 Cup baking soda 2 tbsp lemon juice 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar 8 drops tea tree oil 3 drops peppermint oil "Fill large container with warm water (or use an herbal tea for its healing properties), add the baking soda and stir until disolved. Add remaining ingredients and soak your dreads and scalp with it. Wrap your dreads in a towel and let the mixture soak for at least 30 minutes. Rinse until water runs clear. This will disolve any gunk in the middle of your dreads, will make your scalp tingle and your dreads smell like sunshine. Best of all, its easy to make with stuff from the grocery store."
i'm doing it the natural way too. I used to have long dreads down to my ass for about three years. Cut them all off then two years later I'm starting again. I always used Dr. Bronners Tea Tree & Hemp in the bar form. I believe it is the orange one?? It works very well for cleansing, no residue, and definitely makes your hair prone to forming knots! I only starting neglecting about a week ago, I've washed twice, and my hair is already separating and doin it's thing. No backcombing, twisting, waxing, any of that nonsense. Even the bars last a long time, just scrub your head enough to get your scalp and move it around your locks. It's about $4 but it's worth it than going cheap and ending up with nasty buildup or no dreads at all.
ok so for a while now, when i touch my dreadz with my fingers, my fingers stick together like after rolling some dank nugz. well i asked my mom if my dreadz were sticky and she said they weren't. so what's goin on? is it bad that this is happening or am i just paranoid? thanks all. today i used that deep clean recipe thinking it would stop the stickyness, but it hasn't.
