we have more than one dictionary you know... also, most of his changes were phonetic. Center as opposed to centre. and you think turkey will be allowed to join after bush urged the EU to let em in? Chirac took that kinda personally
I’m not going to get involved in the main discussion here, but I would just like to point out that Turks speak Turkish, not Arabic. It may sound the same to you, but Turkish has more in common with Finnish and Hungarian than with any Arabic language. As for the official language thing, I don’t see why it would be a bad thing not to have an official language (as some people seem to have been upset by that remark). Here in Sweden, there is no official language either, and I see that as a good thing. It means everybody has the right to learn their own language in school, no matter where they come from. There are, however, since the year 2000, a few official minority languages (Finnish, Meankieli (‘Tornedal-finnish’), Saami, Romani and Jiddisch) with certain protection, and Swedish is also an official language of the EU. The American heritage is one of diversity, and to bring back the old melting pot and enforce English on all different groups in the entire US would be nothing but a disgrace. peace, -Pat
I'll happily take yer word for it so where is this huge arabic increase (as stated by Megara) coming from then....and if it is...why does he/she/it think it's a problem? I know what the majority of the changes Webster made were...and why he made them...do you?
you're joking right? America has done far more for the spread of English than England ever could. England may have owned a lot of colonies, but very few of the people in the colonies actually spoke english. Take india for example, you dont believe English was widely spoken in India when england ruled it, right? America, hollywood, American music, and American TV have done far more for causing the world to speak English than anything else. "American Nationalism" owes itself to motivated people who left behind europe/other parts of the world because it sucked there. It wasn't the rich people who left for America, it was the poor who were treated like shit. OZ: why do you continue playing this cat and mouse game? You are obviously bursting at the seams to say, so why dont you just say: Why is he a conman, and why did he make them?
Why is a melting pot thing bad? It has led to America being very successful. It gives us a common culture and heritage. the alternative is virtual segregation and a breeding ground for hatred and resentment. Immigrants need to be made PART of society not to form their own little society within a country.
The debate lacks some open leaks. The american idea of a melting pot doesn't provide common culture and heritage in America, only an idea of common culture and heritage. Neighborhoods in european cities can ofcourse also be defined ethnic and social, but not with such sharp physical limits as in the United States - we've got no 'China Towns' or 'Little Italies' in our metropoles - we've just got urban areas with a high degree of ethnic and national diversity. Is the americans description of their society as a melting pot in fact a plausible metaphor, or is it a discoursive symptom that reveals the distance between dream and social reality?... love and understanding, =wolf=
They say that only a stupid man laughs at his own jokes, but I always laugh at mine incase nobody else does... So I guess you were laughing with me Wich is okay Wheeee
I often laugh, but I never laugh when I want to drink a fresh glass of milk in the morning, just to realize that it has turned into cheese. And I don't laugh when birds shit at my window... If you really laugh at everything, how can you laugh at such things?
ok, I don't laugh, for example, when somebody's ill or died, you know.. but when bird shits on my window.. it's funny!
