you've asked the impossible i wouldnt even know where to begin honestly. I was leaning more that all people: men, women, whites, blacks, asians, etc are all equal under the law. There can be an endless discussion on freedom: should guns be allwoed or not? should there be a death penalty? Do these violate freedoms? God only knows.
All I know is I was born here in America. I didn't get to choose what country I'd be from. I am however grateful that I was born the time I was here. That civil- rights has occured and most discriminations are begining to fade. America has alot of politics behind it I understand. I just feel we are all people with the same common intrests, we want to be able to express ourselves and feel safe. I may feel that America is safer and more free than some countries. But I in no way feel that American people are better than any other people in any other country.
to be free is to do what you want when you want how to want to do it.. no controll over you america, as well as any other country, is not free. some are just less strict than others.
that isnt necessarily a good thing. if we lived in a truely 'free' place, then i could kill you, because that would be my right to do so. and i agree with what happy said, except that we are better at track and field
thankfully we've moved past the state of nature. I dont know where america ranks in some absolute sense of 'how free it is,' but i know it is way better than the state of nature. Freedom from fear is arguably the most important freedom.
im already fearless. thats not the problem. but man they dont even let me get high. what shit is that...
I will say this once and I will say it proudly. I love America. I love the country, the different cultures, and the people. I love New York City for its hectic pulse and feeling of constant life (I'm a fifteen-minute car ride into the city and not much further from that to where the World Trade Center used to stand. Most people around here, myself included, spend enough time in the city to refer to ourselves as "honorary New Yorkers." No, I have not yet gotten over the sight of the horrid, thick, charcoal-colored smoke rising from the ground that I was subjected to on the ride home a week after 9/11; I have not yet gotten over the pain that I felt from the people around me who had lost loved ones who worked there; I have not yet gotten over anything about 9/11 and I don't think I ever will fully). I love Cape Cod for its stunning beauty, its beaches, its forests. I love Savannah for its rich heritage, the architecture, and natural beauty. I love Washington, D.C., for being like a cultural showcase in the heart of America (great ethnic food!). I love Philadelphia, for its historic ties and also for being home to a very young, very modern culture. I love my neighborhood, boring as it can be, because it has a strong sense of community and Italian-American culture (our town is 78% Italian, descended mostly from immigrants who came through Ellis Island). I do not think that we are superior in any way, shape, or form to other countries. There's something to admire and love in every country in the world. This one has its faults, of course. It has towns that aren't so pleasant, it has lots of crime and violence and sorrow and assholes and lots of things that could be improved upon. But I happen love my country because of all the diverse cultures and populations and the natural beauty it contains. Let it be stated clearly that I do NOT feel the same adoration for my government. Let it also be stated clearly that it's five thirty-six in the morning, the sun will soon be rising, and the last sleep I got was for three hours, twenty-eight hours ago. So, you'll forgive me for writing this inanely rambling, sappy post. I can revisit this once I'm fully awake and have gotten sufficient sleep, mkay? Sorry if I've just subjected you all to a truly awful post. Oh, and those "America is the greatest country in the world and no other country could ever be so great!" people grate on my nerves, too. It seems to me like they love the government like a five-year-old loves Mommy... believing Mommy can lead them to no harm, is always correct, etc. Okay, I will really shut up and go get some sleep now. -Pioggia
amiericans i have met have not always been my favourite of people, but then agen i havent met all of them As a nation, the pollution statistics is disgusting (although england is not too good either) the nation also gives very little charity to other countries, its a fact but across the whole country everybody loves where they come frrom, its a fact of that you were born there, its where you came to exist Ilove england and everything about it, so i soappoase americans do the same, only place i like more than england is amserdam, i love the whole thing about it, but back to the point.... As i was saying i love Britain and one thing that really annoyed me was when in paris, an americal approached me and asked where i was from, i told hima nd he then asked me what language he was speaking, now i dont think im wrong at all by saying that american is an accent, or really a dialect, he was speaking english and nothing but iand i really cant get it round my head how offended he was when i told him this
yeah.... i dislike a large percentage of the americans i have met during my travels. only two out of five turned out to be really great people. i dont think everyone is like that, but thats the image that the world has about them. one of the reasons i despise hollywood films and TV nowdays is basically the large influence USA has on everything. they own the world man. i know there are americans here and most of them are really cool people, but personally if i had the chance to visit america i really wouldnt.
ahahaha...shoulda just told him to fuck off americans have never gotten over the fact that webster conned their govt into funding his "dictionary" i've met a few americans who i seem to get ok with online....sorry to say i've never liked any of them i've met inna flesh (tho' i've prolly only spoken to mebbe a hundred or so, so i hope they ain't indicitive of the poplation)....as for visiting america...it's there on me list...right after korea and outer mongolia
America gives more money than any other country. So, i dont know what you're going on about. We dont however, give the highest % per capita. But, in whole terms, the American government 'gives' the most money away. Ontop of that, private donations from Americans is by far the largest in the world. "PRIVATE American citizens donated almost 15 times more to the developing world than their European counterparts, research reveals this weekend ahead of the G8 summit. Private US donors also handed over far more aid than the federal government in Washington, revealing that America is much more generous to Africa and poor countries than is claimed by the Make Poverty History and Live 8 campaigns." http://news.scotsman.com/international.cfm?id=730652005 There is so much misinformation about America that is spread like this to discredit America. It is sad, since people usually buy into the BS without actually checking on the facts to verify any of it. Also, on pollution: Have you BEEN to europe? i can smell the smog everywhere! Italy and greece are especially bad, but it was bad in germany and france. America's pollution is bad in some parts(LA comes to mind, disgusting), but it is getting a lot better. Both America and Europe need to do a lot more to keep the environment healthier though. As for the dictionary thing: thank god for Noah Webster. Phew, man, you guys need to get with the times and stop using that archaic language. Artefact? colour? manoeuver? Wtf Also, English belongs as much to Canada, Australia, new Zealand, America etc as to England. Well said Pioggia, i agree completely. Every country does have something unique to offer to the world. If i wasn't american, i would probably visit america after many other countries and not first. America, in my opinion, is more a country for living than visiting. I liked traveling to europe, but god, i dont think you could pay me enough to live there.
Have you questioned why hollywood and american tv is so pervasive? Remember, no one forces you to watch American TV or hollywood films. They are so popular because people around the world like them. While you may not like them personally, chances are, a lot of other non americans do. We dont "own" the world. The world may just like what we produce. Ditto goes for England. Anyways: i would only ask that you treat everyone equally. Having stereotypes against Americans is no different than having stereotypes against Blacks. Both are bigoted and have no place in a decent society.
You don't have an official language, and as Spanish is rapidly becoming the most common tongue in America...pretty soon you won't have to worry about English at all Webster...yes....it'll soon be Fall won't it? .... ya gotta admit, he was an excellent conman!
Fall, autumn. We use both. We dont feel the need to limit ourselves. Why is he a conman? He is right, we needed to distance ourselves from England and make sense of a language that didnt make much sense. Yeah, spanish is becoming rather popular. Then again, Arabic is rising in europe.
yes we do have an official language, just not a federal one, many indivdual states have adopted english as their official language,
lol...i love americans who don't know the history of their own dictionary...go look up the origin of the words Fall and Autumn....then work your way through the origins of many of Webster's changes...then yer'll see why he was a conman. Arabic is rising in europe...we expect it to rise even further after Turkey becomes a member
