I've been hearing about the border most of my life, since the 60s. The "11 Million" figure has been used for almost 30 years now, as if they all just stopped coming after disco died. The thing is, I think immigration has advanced the nation and has a direct effect on how fast it has risen. But that's immigration, not illegally jumping across a border.

What you and I both know is that none of this matters. Once the economy of the US fails, everyone will bail out like rats from a sinking ship. America doesn't have an immigration problem because most of the people lying their way in have no loyalty nor intention of becoming Americans. It's just a big turnip to squeeze dollars from. Step back and consider who is being exploited by this. Follow your heart little butterfly!

Not that it matters but I'm from South Carolina which is practically the birthplace of rednecks and it isn't that big of a deal. Most of the people who use the term are rednecks who like to proudly proclaim they are rednecks. I've never know anyone to view it as an ethnic slur. Technically I suppose it is, at least towards a certain class of white people - but no one really cares.

Oh I understand the context you are speaking from entirely. However, that's not how it was being used. It was clearly being expressed as a slur. Which marginalizes people for reasons that would be derided if directed toward a different ethnic group.

I'm about to go back to a region where race and ethnicity are very simple issues. Nobody really cares there either.

I'm from California, but I live in Georgia. It's weird how utterly wrong so many people are about the way people get along around here.

You seem to have a lot of anger.

    Anyway:
As an example, my mother's family came from Northern Italy, my father's from southern Italy.

My ethic descent would be Italian (I can tell you with high probability from what pre-Roman tribe form the southern area), that would include ancestry, language, customs, religion, cuisine, and mostly race, etc.

Rednecks are poor, (or more recently ultra conservative) white farmers usually from the southern or mid western states. They could be of German, Irish, Scottish, English, etc. ancestry.
German, Irish, Scottish, and English ancestry, languages, customs, religions, cuisine, etc. differ. They are not ethnically united.

If the term "redneck" bothers you as a term being used for Trump supporters, as I'm pretty sure that's who Sratcho was referring to, how about using the term "dumbfuck" or "idiot" or...

Trump, Limbaugh and their loyal minions can all move to Costa Rica for all I care. It would be good riddance to the lot of them.

A good point. The object is to dehumanize the supporters of the opponent. What's odd is that in the information age we can easily see where all of this has happened before and yet, we don't learn from it.

Also, while I appreciate all the Merriam Webster justifications for why it's ok to say redneck the fact remains that it is being used as an ethnic slur by people who are supposed to be above all of that. Is there no shame? Or is it acceptable because it's about a segment of white people? After all, aren't white people the reason for the worst events in all of humanity? You'd sure think so listening to all the racists these days!

Well, I live around this type of people... I called them idiots long before the election cycle so I didn't mean anything political by it.

Trump supporters are doing a fine job on their own. They don't need any help. All the media has to do is aim a camera at them.

    Pretty much.

A bigoted perspective from someone I thought was so tolerant. Hating anyone because of the color of their skin is wrong. It's really that simple.

Poor 'redneck' farmers?!?! LMFAO! Farmers I know and trump supporters are six figure poor. Our boots work just as good at a $500 a plate restaurant as they do at McDonald's.

I'd rather be labeled redneck since dems/libs know they are are going to loose and name calling has always been their party fall back defense. Difference is, I don't need to live beyond my means and own all my shit, paid for in cash 'I' earned. You can't hang and keep up, tuff fuckin luck buck! There is handouts for lack of knowledge/skill/motivation/management etc.

yep, and faggot refers to a bunch of sticks...

when a word's definition changes in common usage, the meaning of the word becomes what people mean when they say it, rather than going strictly by outdated dictionary definitions that no longer apply.

    Such anger.

I never said Reneck wasn't derogatory, I said it's not ethnic.

I also said it now refers to ultra conservatives who may not be poor. The rest of the post is just a rant.

GeorgeJet you are arguing a flawed argument here. People who use the word redneck for a certain kind of people generally don't do that because they hate whites. Just because rednecks are white or the original meaning of the word references to their skin color doesn't make it so. Rednecks are called and identified as rednecks more so because of their mindsets and even how they express themselves rather than just for having a red neck or being white. You probably know this too.

That it is used derogatory and that people laugh here at rednecks expense and even call them names is not about any person's hate for white people. This is rather obvious (nobody would even feel the need to explain it if you didn't make the statement :p). It has actually more to do with that the average redneck (generalisation) has a tendency to discriminate themselves.

Yes, but what incentives do corporations have to do that, other than tax writeoffs?
