If someone is using a public toilet where door handles, knobs, or stall locks are involved, it's like sex (you're exposed to everyone your partner ever had unprotected sex with) because if someone previously used the bathroom and came in contact with some of their own bodily fluids (changing a tampon perhaps) or excrement, and obviously didnt wash their hands before leaving the stall, then you touch the lock to leave the stall, faucet handle to turn it on/off, and door handle to leave, then you have also touched their bodily fluids or excrement.

This is why we need to wash our hands even if we dont touch our own bodies when toileting, because so many other people dont see the need to.

the answer to all this lies in the question - is my genitalia cleaner than the bathroom surfaces and handles that i need to touch? high volume toilets and the ones with a weird underlying "ambience" need to be treated with caution. with some of the toilets i've been in it would have been cleaner to wash my hands with my own urine. the worst toilets are the ones with the hot air blower that throws the germs around whilst creating a thick moisture in the air

I wash my hands everytime I go to the washroom, even if it was a false alarm. Public washrooms-I hover every time.

I was going to vote "Yes, always" - but then I thought about it. Do I really wash my hands every time?

And I had to admit no, I don't. If I'm at home and I peed, then I don't. If I'm out and I've been drinking, I must admit there have been times when I've been too lazy (or, we could call a spade a spade and say "drunk") to wash my hands - especially in a bathroom with no soap or towels.

Also - I worked as a waitress for several years in four different restaurants and never saw anyone do anything nasty to food. We will steal french fries off your plate if you're mean, though. :)

It takes very little time to wash your hands. Yuck, I was in a restaurant recently and the womyn who made MY salad was in the can, and she came out of the stall, did nothing but push the blow dryer on the wall and went back to her station.

I called when I got home and talked to the manager. YUCK. I don't want Hep B from somebody who is too lazy to simply wash. She took the effort to PUSH the dryer on, so the manager would think she washed, what is wrong with people like that?

Just physically being PRESENT in the toilet makes you accessible to picking up all kinds of microbes. If you're a guy and you touch yourself you should wash your hands. I think of all the times I scratch my face or run my fingers through my hair... yeah... if I were going to engage in an activity like preparing food or cleaning up another person I would certainly wash my hands. No if's and's or butts! :)

Actually, contrary to popular belief a toilet seat is much cleaner then a cell phone.

Hmmmm. I'd like to see a reference on that. Most people don't shit on their cell phones, or place them directly on their butts or genitals.......I KNOW my cell phone is cleaner than a public toilet. Just by the number of people who use each one (one for my phone and hundreds for the toilet) and the fact that I don't put my naked butt on my phone. :)

Personal Hygiene is extremely important for you and others. Therefore I choose to cleanse myself everytime I use the bathroom.
For all of you that don't, well for a start you're rank and not only that, but you contribute to the urine content in the peanuts you get in bars! LOL :)

YES ! I just wish I could say the same about the employees who work in places !
Incidentally, ladies, it's a good idea to wash your hands BEFORE you go potty also. There's bacteria on your hands that can travel from paper to skin. It can cause yeast infections.:(

really the knobs on the stalls and the sink are probably more contaminated than the toilet seat is. Besided if you wash your hands then use a paper towel dispenser, you have "reciontaminated" yourself. I'll was only if the sink knobs don't need to be touched and the paper towel dispenser is automatic. No one you need to put your hands on. I keep hand sanitizer on me and use that instead. If you are working in food service, like at a mall. You'd be better off washing your hand back at the place where you work than in the bathroom. But if you work in a restaurant or a place where there is one bathroom, you should wash your hands there.
I have not heard of urine being able to be detected in vomit, but if you caught a specific bacteris from a place, that can be traced back to an individual or a source. Like e-coli or salmonella. I had a friend who contracted typhoid from a mexican food stand in San Diego and it was traced right back to one person.
