SomethingAwful's forums are really good; with a subforum for any group of people...and yeah, TCC isn't bad for drug-related stuff, whereas BYOB is just like our Random Thoughts.

As far as this place being here in this format in 50 years? Unlikely. Twenty years ago the high point of internet culture were BBS forums and nothing even remotely like them is still around. IRC was a huge hotbed, but is now barely a shadow of former glory. Web-based chatrooms were a major thing, but now have vanished since every social networking sight has chat built in and everyone has an AIM, Y!, and MSN account at the least. Hell, all of Geocities was recently yanked from us - a massive trove of people's personal sites and webrings that represented those glorious 'wild west' days of the internet.

Still, there isn't much of a 'hippie forum' anywhere else. Sure, the guys who think hippie=drugs and nothing else have plenty of spots to hang out, but for the rest of us this is the main hub.

But in fifty years the internet as we know it will have evolved into something very different. It's likely we'll have ipod/cellphone/netbook sort of deals that connect into a wireless network they're calling 'the cloud' where you won't store music or movies with you, but just access any given piece of media or information at any time from anywhere. The internet protocols and means by which we see them will have switched enough that this site certainly won't appear the way it does now, nomatter what happens.

Hell, in fifty years? We'll probably have a pseudo-holographic heads up display that gives us the impression that we're hanging out at a party with all the members represented as their chosen avatar - each thread appearing as a conversation we can tune into or not by just wandering up to it and talking - no doubt we'll have sufficiently advanced word-to-type programs by then to clearly have our voices translated to scrolling text, or just hear them directly.

No. Just no. Myspace wont be here in 50 years either.

We'll all have the same thoughts in 50 years so forums and social networking sites will become redundant.

I know right? I used to be a cannabis.com regular, but they got all uptight and now it's just for "medical patients" but yeah then I found out about HF and those were the only two I ever knew about.
Edit: I don't really care about any other forum, unless it is cooler setup and cooler people which I highly doubt it for both of those.

Yeah intelligent post grim :) I don't think it will matter as I will be too old to give a fuck about anything anymore.

    Oh hey another member :D

BYOB I find meh though, it takes random thoughts way too literally. I like laissez faire, that outside of TCC is where I spend most my time, it's like politics for the insane on acid, and most of the rules that normally apply to SA aren't enforced as long as it's not trolling the megathreads and still can't post nws images.

SA saved my life kind, not literally, but in Ask/Tell the "Ask me about being a transsexual!" threads I damn near stalked for 2 years before even joining, and I was like "wait, these are bitterly sarcastic people who have explode on each other like every 5 pages and it doesn't have that weird vibe other support forums have, holy shit I can actually relate to these people."

I've been reading SA for going on 5-6 years now though, and I still for the life of me can't figure out FYAD, it's like 4chan with a forum, which I guess kind of makes sense since 4chan was a quasi knock off of SA.
