This is the Big WHY that most people are afraid to ask, afraid to confront---so instead they fill their lives with short term pleasures, and allow others to make up their minds for them. This is what Kierkegaard talked about.

In the novel, Nausea, by Jean Paul Sartre-----the main character is faced with the same question. He gets caught up in existence as well.

 

I am called many things by many people at different times and I am those things to those people at those times but spending all the time I have with myself none of those things are particularly prevalent. Depression is anger turned inwards. That relationships become the focus is a given because, after all, what else is there? Seeing and witnessing unfairness begins at an early age; it will, of course, drive you to blaming the source of the injustice--a parent. You come out of such depression when you come to the realization that your father is but a boy, like yourself, whom has grown either up or out. In other words, relief comes with the acknowledgement that holding others up to a standard of perfection is not realistic.

This is just another way of saying that expectation is the source of all woe. I can expect that you will be a son of a bitch, or I can expect that you will be agreeable. Either way, I will have set myself up to experience frustration; or is it depression; or is it anger; or is it resentment? You will be who you are/will, and that has nothing much to do with me.
