Don't you ever wonder why the homeless stay up in the cold states, I mean there's nothing keeping them there, I think that's got to be the biggest benefit from being homeless, just set off walking and don't stop until you hit Miami !!!!!! you can ask for change and be warm at the same time !!!! hell I think I'll do it !!!!!! .

Yeah, plus more and more of those much needed mental health services for the poor are being cut. I mean, we need every penny to pay for the war, you know?

I had a life changing experience when i was about 18. i was at an outdoor party and this homeless guy came up. Everyone kind of shyed away from him but I decided to start up a conversation.

He had just been beaten severly by a roving gang of college frat boys for doing absolutely nothing..and on top of that this guy was a vietnam vet, like many homelss?people are...it just pissed me off so much that these "All American" frat boys would beat an innocent man AND a veteran of combat.

That being said, I also lived in Seattle during the late 90's and the homeless people there were generally 21 years old...one asked me for 20 dollars once, and another girl, dressed in expensive goth type fashion, asked for 20 dollars to fix her expensive boot...

I generally give money to real homeless people

QUote>makes me sad and i feel bad for them, but they are homeless by their choice

How the hell do you know...its not that hard to end up homeless, especially when you have no family to help you, or have mental problems...keep on believing that if it makes you feel better, but I think it makes you sound ingnorant, there are many types of homeless people

I used to think like this too. Because I had been conditioned to do so. But after doing a lot of volunteer work at the shelters (plus I used to help edit one of the homeless newspapers in town), I have learned that the so-called homeless scam artists are not the majority. But how are folks supposed to know that when all we ever see on TV or in the papers is another sensational tale about some homeless dude (or woman) that is conning the public outta hundreds of dollars each day, and spending it all on booze? But that's what sells papers, and gets the highest ratings. So that's all we're gonna see in the media. I would have to say that 75% of most homeless folks are chronically mentally ill. They can't even think straight without meds and proper therapy. And since all the recent health care cuts, more and more low income folks are losing their doctors and/or meds, and that leads to losing jobs and homes, and eventual homelessness.

I have met too many very bright people (many with college degrees) that have wound up on the streets. But their mental illness brought them to this point. I say the solution is adequate health care. Most of these folks are seriously ill. But the government considers this such a low priority, that instead of truly helping these folks to get healthy and more independent....... we are taking away more and more services from them every day. The homeless situation has tripled in my town since you-know-who became president. Think there could be a connection?

    Peace,

    ~PD

You have a very generous spirit. I'm sorta like that too, but I have learned to sorta feel the situation out. If somebody is really drunk and/or high, and they ask me for money, I will usually say I am on my way to grab a bite to eat, and they are welcome to tag along. That I can afford to buy them something to eat. But I have been in situations where certain fast food places refused to serve homeless folks. Because of their poor hygiene and stuff. So I usually tell them about a place where they can go to grab a quick shower, and then suggest that they meet up with me after they're done. Many are willing to do this. I think they are just so glad to be treated with a little warmth and kindness for a change. Although I have had one or two not bother to show up. But that hardly ever happens. Keep up the good spirit!

    Peace,

    ~PD

OKay listen!!: I'm a homeless person, have been for a long time. So I know and I have to tell you--

!!!!! MOST HOMELESS PEOPLE ARE ASSHOLES. ALOT OF THE PEOPLE YOU SEE FYING A SIGN AT THE INTERSECTIONS MAKE MORE $$$ THAN YOU DO (goverment checks, foodstamps, etc) AND THEY DON'T HAVE ANY BILLS!!!!

AND YES, MOST OF THEM SPEND MOST OF THIER (your) MONEY ON DRUGS!!!

I've known alot of guys who panhandle or fly the "will pretend I want to work for food" signs and some of these guys make as much as or more than contracters. Alot of them will turn down work if it's offered BECAUSE they know they can make more begging.

PLUS they usually eat for free and get free medical.

I'm only telling you this because these guys piss me off. It would really piss me off to see a struggling single mom hand over some of her $ to some asshole who makes more than she doe's, doesn't pay rent, and doesn't have any dependants (aside from his connection and drinking buddies).

I'm a travelling carny/street muscian/construction laborer so I live in that world more often than not but I make good money and I don't drink or do drugs so I can afford to be a self righteous bitch about this.

On the other hand there ARE people out here, like I said before, who are truly fucked up through no fault of their own.

Ironically these homeless people are the ones who are least likely to ask you for anything.

i grew up with that. the school i went to was right next to the city in the bad part of town. there were always prostitutes standing on the street where we went into school and one time we even got spat on by a pro when we were just walking by minding our own business. the stairs we had to walk down to get to the bus always stunk of vomit and a few times there was police tape blocking them off. every morning the janitor had to go up and down the street and pick up syringes and condoms before the kids arrived for school. there were bars on the windows and at night time after 6pm or so the boarders werent allowed to look out the windows coz you can imagine the kind of stuff that was going on outside on the street. at lunch times we had a good view of one of the roads and we saw hookers getting picked up and dropped off and people arguing. most of the people who picked up the hookers were handymen. theres my 2 cents

yeah i have a soft spot, because i myself was homeless at one time, and yes it was my choice, in my eyes it was better then living with my father who beat me.

i dont give money away though, if thay say they are hungry i go into the nearest store buy them food then give it to them, and sit and chat for a bit hear there story. i took one to rehab once, i've given blankets and hats i've crocheted before to some. thats what i do yup. your right seamonster most of the homeless people in seattle are 20 something, usually running away from abusive homes, or doing drugs.

I'm a nomad. I choose to live out of a van. Some call it odd. I usually live in national forests for a couple weeks at a time then move on. When I fly a sign I fly it because I actully NEED something and I have no other choice. I'm happy with my life. I would talk to the person before giving them money, get a feel for them. Its 50/50. Like someone else said alot of the homeless are dicks. I know personally I've never bought drugs with money given to me. Don't laugh but before I go on a sign flying mission, I pray. I ask to please be sent kind people who are willing to help my way. After someone hands me money I pray that good deeds will not go un noticed and send good karma their way. Once I have enough for what I need, I go. If I get spanged I usually give them all I have. I was raised to have respect for everyone and everything... I guess the reason why I can not want to steal or be a money hungry sign flyer is because this lifestyle is my choice. I visit my mom for holidays, I get along with my mom (only my mom unforetunetly) so its not that I don't have a home if I ever need one.

This reminds me of a story. One day while I was asleep in a parking garage this kid (12-15) who was a cheeseburger or two over 100 lbs came up and kicked me and said "get the fuck up you peice of shit and get a fucking job.". I got up and he spit on me so I grabed him by his head and through him at a car and the little fucker was still mouthing off to me then to a swing. I let him hit me a few times then he relised he fucked up and tried to run but I kicked his foot and made him trip himself before he could get anywhere. Then I grabbed him up by leg and punched him in the back a few times :D it was kinda fun. Then I heard someone coming and he was crying so I ran.

i only give money to the homeless when i see them at night, rarely during the day and never on weekends. you can make a lot of money pretending to be homeless by going down to the big city on weekends cuz thats when everyone is down to shop....if you see them late at night, you know they're actually homeless and arent just faking it
it was recently neg 27 F here the other day, and i can't even imagine how many homeless died becuase of some asshole pretending to be homeless soaking up peoples change when a truely needy person could have used it.

to that greek idiot who said its their choice to be in the northern states

what do you propose the homeless do between big cities when their travelling through the small towns who don't have corners they can sleep on, and who don't have anyone wiulling to give them money, where they'll be picked up anc charged for loitering then become wanted for not being able to pay their fines? you can't jsut roam about on foot as a homeless 1000 miles down to florida when your in new york. it doenst work that way.
